To expect that cat detectors should not be heard by humans, at least not to this extent?

House across from us has a cat detector in the front garden and it's ridiculously loud. I'm sure humans aren't supposed to hear it but we all do. Over summer we couldn't open our windows at the front of the house, including my toddlers bedroom window. It would go off whenever we used our front door or get into our car. It seems that the distance is maybe set as too long so I kindly asked if this could be changed and then we didn't hear anything again until the past few days and it seems to have returned to how it was previously.

How do I handle this? We have a cat, as do a few other houses on our street so I totally understand their issue of having cats on their lawn but it's affecting my sleep, where we can sit in our house, where the kids can play on the front and it's giving me headache. They weren't very happy last time I asked them to change it so I can't imagine they will be again.

Go and speak to them

VividGemini · 08/11/2021 12:40

Omg that sounds awful I posted too soon somehow! Explain that you'll remove it if they don't!

jaychops · 08/11/2021 12:43

I did speak to them last time and it seemed to sort the problem for a few months however they were reluctant. I will speak to them again (or send DH!) but I'm expecting it won't be as easy!

It's a noise nuisance. I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to use these in residential areas as theyemit a low pitch that can apparently affect young children and teenagers as well

Anyway, (get together with your other NDNs who are suffering if you can or just do it in your own) send in a noise nuisance complaint to borough council Environmental health Dept & ask them to urgently investigate as is causing headaches and ill health

Cheerbear23 · 08/11/2021 12:47

We have this issue, we have inaudible ones, but I can hear the neighbours’ clicking away.
Ours don’t seem to work as I cleared 11 car shits off our lawn last week 🤬

Whereismumhiding3 · 08/11/2021 12:51

Ah it is a high ultra sound pitch. Anyway it shouldn't be audible to humans, so either it is faulty or not fit for purpose if you can hear it and it's causing headaches.

As Neighbours haven't responded to complaints- report it to EH (environmental health)

There was a thread about these years ago in another site.

How does a loud noise detect cats?

XenoBitch · 08/11/2021 12:53

My next door neighbour used to have on and it put me off going in my own garden. It also didn't stop cats going in their garden either.

gogohm · 08/11/2021 12:54

@Cheerbear23 sorry if you are my neighbours, our silly cat decided next doors garden was more preferable for some reason, more sun at this time of year.

If anyone has any tips for how to train a cat to toilet in one spot I'm all ears. It's not my cat, took in dsd's cat to avoid her mum rehoming her.

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

How does a loud noise detect cats?
Sorry scratch that - just read it again and I understand now.
EerieSilence · 08/11/2021 13:57

It's a cat deterrent, not detector, isn't it? Hate those things and similar ones, I can hear them and get awful headaches.
