To wonder if all teenagers are like this?

DS15 had sport today so was required to wear his gym kit to school. This consists of shorts, short sleeve aertex shirt and a waterproof sports jacket, all school issue.

He came downstairs with just shorts and shirt, no jacket. He opened the door to leave and it was chucking it down. He said, "ah dammit!". I thought he had gone to pick up his jacket. Then he came back downstairs, explained that he "forgot his headphones" and wandered out into the pouring rain, no jacket, but with this headphones in, without a care in the world.

Is it just my teen, or are they all like this?

My two teen boys refuse to wear any kind of school jacket and any kind of practical raincoat. They'll wear a puffer or similar jacket they think is fashionable. They tend to do this only on warm days Grin

paisley256 · 08/11/2021 00:43

Mine are anti coat too.

Stillfunny · 08/11/2021 01:06

When I was a teenager , my friend and I would wear our school coats out of the house , take them off , roll them up and stick it in a hedge and retrieve it on the way home.
Never wore a coat going out clubbing as you would have to lug it around , guard it or worse have to hang it up and have que up at the cloakroom .

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/11/2021 01:09

teenagers don't say "dammit"
they say "oh fuck it"

so no, I don't know anyone like yours

Hunderland · 08/11/2021 01:12

Neither teen DS ever wore coats except on DofE and DD (14) carries a brolly even when there is no rain forecast Confused

KloppsTeeth · 08/11/2021 01:20

“Dammit” has become very popular here for teens. DS tells me it he got it from a YouTuber.

He won’t wear a coat either. No one wears one to school. They don’t have anywhere to hang them up during the day, their lockers have been stopped due to Covid and none of them want to lug stuff around. He cares not if he gets soaked, as no one else is wearing a coat either, even in the snow.

PumpkinPie2016 · 08/11/2021 06:08

I teach in a large secondary.

Majority of kids never wear coats!

It can be freezing and pouring down but they won't wear them Confused they come in shivering/dripping wet, yet look at me like I am from a different planet when I suggest a coat might be a good idea!

Definitely a teenager thing!

NameChangeNameShange · 08/11/2021 06:33

By contrast I live on a sub-tropical island, my son's requested birthday gift this year was a puffa jacket. It will be cool enough for approximately 2 weeks to justify it. Last week he wore it because it was 21 degrees and that was cold enough

My conclusion - its not about jackets, its about doing the very exact opposite of what would be sensible, on principle!

JuneOsborne · 08/11/2021 06:35

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

It's because they're contrary twats.

Noducksgiven · 08/11/2021 06:45

Yep. Shorts and t-shirt all year round, even in December /January. We're in Scotland. Just doesn't seem to feel the cold at all Confused

lljkk · 08/11/2021 06:47

shorts & short sleeves in the pooring rain in November? No, they wouldn't do that. They feel the cold and need legs covered + arms.

Rain and cold would prompt Hoody, fleece, begs for lifts.

No headphones but ear buds yes.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/11/2021 06:47

Yup common! And not just teens, my 10 year old has already started it and he's not the only one in his year

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/11/2021 06:48

Although not shorts, he's refused to wear shorts for years. Don't know how he'll react next year when he has to wear them for pe

wetpebbles · 08/11/2021 07:07

No coat but always headphones

malificent7 · 08/11/2021 07:19

Yup...my teen is the same. Refuses to let me buy her a decent waterproof...even a Nike one wont do.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 08/11/2021 07:35

DD is only 10 but firmly in this stage already. Confused

Very normal.

My youngest daughter wears a coat but her buddy doesn't and is constantly absolutely drenched.

She has a perfect school coat but just doesn't like wearing it.

One of my sons was the same.

We compromised with a super light rain jacket at the end of his bag for when it was torrential and it was up to him to pull it out.

Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't 🤷‍♀️

AlbusDumbledore2234 · 08/11/2021 09:04

My DD does this, she walks out the door with no coat on, turns round with an 'Ooppsss' and rushes upstairs to get her lipgloss Hmm

Let them get on with it, they will soon learn (or maybe not) Grin

LindaEllen · 08/11/2021 09:30

@HeddaGarbled

I don’t know any 15 year olds who say “dammit” 😃
My DSS would at that age because we didn't like him swearing in front of us so it was his go to alternative haha.
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/11/2021 09:32

DD, 13 is exactly like this.

Embroidery · 08/11/2021 09:35

Teachers do judge kids without coats.

So much so that in poorer areas all teens wear coats to school. (Fear of ss)
A poor kid in no coat is assumed to not afford one - neglect.
MC kids dont have to suffer this assumption.

It was only when my own teen children got to secondary age that I realised in leafy green MC schools (some) kids dont wear coats in winter.

I say its not in all schools but the MC parents are insistent that it's the only way and universal. (I wish they were more worldly and it does annoy me.)

Im pleased to see it is changing though. More and more Yr10s and 11s are wearing coats. Cool kids especially, almost as the new rebellion. Not expensive coats either. The expensive coats are beginning to get a bit if a chavvy reputation. So much so that in cooler older groups the 1 in 4 without one is cold and soon to conform. Non cool kids always and still do wear coats but that was part if the problem.
Younger kids still not wearing coats so much, in a bid to be cool, but it'll soon filter down. Hopefully.
Covid lockdowns have helped knock some sense into them.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/11/2021 10:08

Well I definitely live in a poor area and the head teacher himself says most of year 6 refuse to wear costs so no judging or phone calls to ss here. They do have real neglect to deal with though
