Human bite advice!!

Posting for traffic, posted elsewhere but in a slight panic!!
My 2 year old dd bit my 4 year old ds this evening. It’s broken the skin and caused it to bleed a little, very red and a little swollen around the bite mark. Should I phone the drs in the morning? I’m not sure wether it’s harmless as after a quick Google (I know) it’s saying having a course of antibiotics for cover and a tetanus!? Thank you for any replies

I've been bitten. I just washed it really well, put some salon on and keep an eye on it. Healed fine!

ComDummings · 07/11/2021 22:42

If the skin is broken you’ll need antibiotics for your DS

NoStylist · 07/11/2021 22:44

It is broken, this is why I’m worrying. I will phone in the morning anyway to see what they say. Thank you

It'll be fine. Just put a bit of antiseptic cream on it. If it gets, hot, red or swollen give 111 a call.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 07/11/2021 22:54

I think you’d be better to call 111 and ask them to be honest

amoobaa · 07/11/2021 22:55

As an adult I got bitten (worked in a special needs school a while back) and I was sent to get a tetanus jab same day.

NoStylist · 07/11/2021 22:57

I’m in north Wales we don’t have 111 here, I could give nhs direct Wales a call. Have attached a picture, do I phone tonight or wait until morning? (Brain doesn’t work very well in panic mode- apparently I need strangers over the internet to tell me what to doGrin)

Have you seen this on google?

If a child is bitten while in child care or at play, here’s what you should do:

If the skin is broken:

Let the wound bleed gently. Do not squeeze it.

Clean the wound carefully with soap and water.

Apply a mild antiseptic.

Check to see whether the bitten child has been vaccinated against tetanus and if he has had all of the recommended doses. If not, refer to a doctor or clinic for tetanus vaccine.

If either child has not received 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine, the public health unit or a doctor should be notified. Hepatitis B vaccine will usually be recommended right away for that child.

Watch the wound over the next few days. If it gets red or begins to swell, the child should be seen by a doctor.

I’d ring the GP in the morning or 111. I wouldn’t take advice here just to wash it and put salvon on it.

amoobaa · 07/11/2021 23:02

I’m not a doctor and there are of course always risks with everything... and rare things that happen etc etc but... I’d be inclined to say don’t panic... a call to the doctor first thing would be what I’d do.

Easier said than done though, I know.

Are there no similar services to 111 in wales?

Tanfastic · 07/11/2021 23:03

I was in hospital for three days earlier this year with a serious dog bite. I spent a lot of time chatting to the nurses as no visitors allowed and they told me human and dog bites all need antibiotics as can potentially cause infection. I was on them intravenously for three days and got a booster for tetanus.

I would probably get some advice to be on the safe side op.

NoStylist · 07/11/2021 23:04

@amoobaa yes we have NHS Direct Wales, I’m on hold to them because I’m a complete panicker when it comes to the kids I’m hoping they will say a call to the GP in the morning will be okay, poor ds is fast asleep!

Oh that's quite a bite!
I have had quite a few unfortunately (I work with children who have severe autism and LDs) over the years. Generally a good wash, a bit of antiseptic cream and no harm done so I wouldn't go waking your DS , but I would keep a close eye on it and perhaps a GP call. I have seen the odd bite go nasty needing antibiotics.

OppsUpsSide · 07/11/2021 23:22

That’s a heck of a bite poor lad

Hankunamatata · 07/11/2021 23:27

If had the pre school booster that has tetnus in it

Cryalot2 · 07/11/2021 23:30

Awhh poor child , it looks painful.
Clean it well and use antiseptic cream .

Redsquirrel5 · 07/11/2021 23:32

I’m a Nursery Nurse. I was bitten at work several times at once and luckily I had a GPappointment anyway. I showed him and he sent me up to the hospital( at night) to get a Hep injection. I was covered by tetanus so didn’t need one of those but had I not been I would have been given one.
Glad you have rung them. Human bites are worse than dog bites are should always be seen if the skin is broken.

NoStylist · 07/11/2021 23:44

Thank you for replies, currently waiting for a phone call back. He has had his preschool booster jabs which was a question they asked over the phone as that has the tetanus. Although I’m in a panic and if they say to go up obviously I will- but I’m really hoping they will say GP in morning, ds loves his sleep!

Well this thread has been informative. When I first read the OP I though a little was, sackings and all will be fine.

I was really surprised to hear a little tetanus, hep jabs etc… could totally understand if it was an animal but I would never have thought you’d have to do that with a sibling. Surely baby won’t have any diseases. I’m shocked I didn’t know…

Who knew!

TableFlowerss · 07/11/2021 23:53

a little was and some savlon I mean lol

NoStylist · 07/11/2021 23:59

@TableFlowerss this is why I don’t like google haha!! Originally thought oh it’ll be fine, not like a stray animal had bit him. Googled it whilst laying in bed because why not? And then oh no, what have I done- panic alert! and then come to mumsnet Grin
