AIBU to wonder if my cat has been properly castrated?

Have just rehomed a cat from the RSPCA. They say that he has been neutered and the paperwork reflects this. However, he has extremely large testicles in situ. I remember from cats I have had when I was a child that the testicles were removed when cats were castrated. Can anyone advise on this as Googling hasn't been particularly helpful.

Never thought I'd be discussing cat scrotums on a Sunday morning Grin

Panic over guys! I have felt them and there is definitely nothing inside either ball! Phew!
What an excellent way to start your Sunday Grin

Never thought I would be feeling cat scrotums on a Sunday morning! Feels very wrong indeed!

@icedcoffees

They often leave the ball sac but remove the balls Grin
I've never known any vet to remove the scrotum. In young males it tends to be small, the skin is more elastic/hasn't stretched as much & it kind of pings back so you don't really notice under the fluff Grin

The sac will gradually disappear. Well it did on our dog. It’s nearly gone after six months.

It must have been because he was castrated late in life!

Furry ball sacs on a Sunday morning. Well I never!

Do you have a picture of him? Does he have a lovely big wide face and chunky neck?
As much as I'm a supporter of early neutering in cats, late neutered boys tend to look super handsome Smile
Our boy, on the other hand, seems to have a kittens head on a massive long body 😂 he's 18 months so still a bit of a gangly teen.

Sillyotter · 07/11/2021 10:28

Has he just been done? We often see swelling in the scrotum post op which makes it look like they’re still there. Definitely check with the vets who did him though and take him to your own so they can have a feel.

Fernx0x0 · 07/11/2021 10:32

Here he is! He is rather splendid, although I may be biased! He is a bit Siamesey with thin tail, wiry legs and angular face. Also has a very Siamese type yowl.

No, not done recently. Castrated in August. I think I can safely assume that he has been castrated as there is nothing in those sacs!

He is very handsome!
My old boy was a ginger too, but fluffy. Wonderful cat although not very bright 😅

What a lovely looking cat.

I have learnt so much about cat castrations this morning!

My cat is a genius! He even climbs onto the back of the armchair to put his hand on the door handle to ask to go out.

When we rescued our male cat over 20 years ago, we were told he was neutered. A quick check with our vets confirmed this wasn't the case. He had to go back to the rescue vets to be redone.
I would get him checked.

I did work experience at a vets... Cat castrations were an eye opener! I do enjoy casually explaining that they're less 'removed' and more torn out to men though Grin
CreepySpider · 07/11/2021 10:51

@Lellochip I bet the men you explain that to are busy crossing their legs and trying to run away! Grin

One of ours is like this! He's 4 now but he still looks very kitteny - narrow shoulders, skinny little face, slinky/gangly looking. He's a good weight, but compared to our other boy (who's a big chunky muscular thing), he looks tiny.

We got him at 8 months and I don't know when he was neutered, so maybe it was relatively early and that's why he's still all legs!
