To ask if it's possible to have a good sleeper that's breastfed?

Hi, sorry if this question comes across as ignorant. I always intended to breastfeed DD but for a variety of reasons we never got hang of it, so instead she was fed exclusively on pumped milk in a bottle for four months, then we transitioned to formula when I couldn't take pumping anymore. So basically she's always been bottle-fed, though what's in the bottle has changed over the months. She's also always been a decent night sleeper. She's nearly a year now.

We're now thinking about dc2 and plan to start TTC soon. I am 100% committed to ensuring dc2 gets breast milk for at least as long as DD did, even if it means going back on the pumps.

But there's one thing that's making me reluctant to try direct breastfeeding, at least beyond the "fourth trimester" stage, a d that's that every time I read about a poor sleeper on here, a baby 6+ months old that wakes every hour, it always seems to be a breastfed baby wanting boob. The early stages where DD needed feeding every 2-4 hours nearly killed me and even now I find the night wakings tough, even though she sleeps through about half the time and is generally pretty good. DH does more than his fair share at night, too - think I just have a low tolerance for sleep deprivation!

So are breastfed babies more likely to be poor sleepers? I don't mean in the newborn stage as of course all newborns need regular feeding through the night, but later? Does anyone have a breastfed baby that sleeps well? I'm fully aware that there are bottle fed babies that are poor sleepers!

Sorry for the long preamble to this post, it was mostly in the hopes of not sounding goady. This is a sincere question and not meant to trigger a bf Vs FF fight.

There may be a huge element of luck to it and your second baby might not be similar to your first.

My DS was EBF, he slept through from eight weeks but tended to miss the 2 am feed anyway, I used to wake him up for it as I was too full in the morning. The MW/HV was Shock when she found out and said "Don't wake him up for goodness' sake!" So I used to wake up, use the pump to express, put the milk in ice cube trays in the freezer and go back to bed. DS would wake at about 6.30 - 7.00 am. Having the portioned milk in the freezer meant DH could feed him too. It worked well at the time but looking back, it does seem mad...

DS had a dummy too, he gave it up himself at some point but he got a lot of comfort from it when he was tiny.

Here's a link to some academic research: www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/bfm.2014.0153

It found no link between night wakings and night feedings between mothers with breastfed babies and formula fed babies aged 6-12 months.

DD bottle fed from 3 months…. but of a rubbish sleeper.

DS breastfed until 2 1/2 years…. Generally a much better sleeper.

Both woke in the night until about 11 months but I don’t consider that poor, just normal baby sleep.

I breastfed both - for about 2.5 years each - one was an absolute shit sleeper - the other slept through from day 2. Both didn’t take a bottle. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Marvellousmadness

Bm digests quicker than formula. Hence why babies who are fed formula sleep longer as their stomachs are filled for longer

My formula fed baby slept 12 hrs straight without awakening from 7 weeks on. And still does now half a decade later. And so did my second baby. 7 weeks on the dot, sleeping 12 hours straight.

The advantage with formula is that you can literally chart every single ounce of formula your baby drinks and know when your baby needs a bit more or is done feeding. I chose to formula feed for that reason because I need sleep (no sleep or poor sleep will agrevate my mental illness)Hence my choice.

But I also put my babies in their own beds from day 1 and I Always put them to bed awake and letting them self settle and fall asleep by themselves.

Two of mine were EBF, one was mix fed and one was on formula fully by 7 weeks. I actually found the fact you could see with formula how much had been drunk or not quite stressful, with BF it was out of sight out of mind, they stopped just when they were done and I never gave it a second thought.

I don't think how they were fed made a blind bit of difference to how they slept.
All were put down in their own beds and all fed to a routine after the first few days.
Two (one ebf and one ff) slept 6-8 hours a night from a couple of weeks old but woke up pretty much every night from the age of three to about six.
The other two (one ebf and one mix fed) took much longer but then were fantastic sleepers as toddlers and beyond.

Interestingly both sets of two have very similar personalities. The better sleeping babies are now really laid back and quiet.
The 'worse' sleepers are really sporty and energetic but also really stressy.

Mine were both breastfed and slept well. Both slept through from about 12 weeks.

Tumbleweed101 · 06/11/2021 18:01

My four were good sleepers. I learned to bf laying down so minimal waking for us both during the night and I also swaddled all my babies which I think helped. I also put them on their tummies to sleep as this made a huge difference but obviously guidance doesn't recommend doing this.

Whatagreytdoggo · 06/11/2021 18:20

Both mine exclusively breastfed. Dc1 had a dummy, dc2 didn't.
Both brilliant sleepers, but dc1 was better sooner. Possibly due to having a dummy.

My two cents.. it's been a beautiful experience and I'll be very sad when it ends. I'd recommend giving it a good go to anyone. 🥰

DD was EBF and slept 12 hours straight after her 8 week jabs and every night thereafter
