Retail Refund Policy

It really gets my goat. It's all changed. Or am I the only one who's not noticed until now?

I get a gift. I don't like the gift. I take it back to the shop, with a gift receipt. I can't get a refund because I don't have the card with which the gift was paid for. Of course I don't. It was a gift. I can only get a credit note.

Every shop is doing this now. I don't like it.

It must be legal I guess but it's not right. Grrr. I don't even like Next clothes.

if it's next buy underwear, or jewellery, or home stuff, or children's clothes?

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 12/12/2007 16:55

I thought the whole point of the gift receipts was so that you could get a refund, rather than a normal receipt where you do have to have the card. What a swizz.
But they certainly can do this - refunds are a curtesy to the custonmer unless the goods are unfut for purpose.

YABU

why should the shop lose out because you don't like the gift you got?

LIZS · 12/12/2007 17:08

Techincially the actual contract is with the original purchaser not you. The retailer is under no legal obligation to change or refund even the original purchaser unless it is faulty, damaged, unfit for purpose etc - taste or size don't feature for example - although often they have their own discretionary policy. The credit note is actually more than they are obliged to offer. Agree there is little point offering gift receipts if they won't honour them, are there t and c's on it ?

Camilla, have you never returned something that you didn't like? Seriously, ever? And did you worry about the shop losing out because of it? And they're not losing out - they get the product back to sell again.

I didn't know the legalities of exchange but was used to getting a refund on production of any kind of receipt. Thanks for the info.

i cannot recall doing so, unless i needed a different size

at the end of the day, legally, the shop do not have to give you a refund at all, even with a receipt if there is nothing wrong with what has been bought.. if it is faulty or not fit for purpose then that changes things.

you have a credit note, i am sure that you could find something in Next you want for you or the DCs

geekymummy · 12/12/2007 21:26

what FioFio said.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 12/12/2007 21:35

ive never exchanged unless it was faulty wrong size etc why cant you change it for something else?they cant refund cash as they didnt get cash for it so slightly yabu

malovitt · 12/12/2007 21:44

It is to stop fraud, when people use a stolen card and go back later get a cash refund.

It's been usual store policy for years.

If you buy using a card the refund has to go back on that card.

woodenchair · 12/12/2007 21:48

The gift receipt is to that you can exchange it for something that is the same price as the original gift.

If you take it back without a receipt and the item has been reduced they are only obliged to give you something of the current selling price. If this is after christmas it may be alot less than purchase price

islandofsodor · 13/12/2007 00:16

YABU. Shops do not have to give a refund, even with a receipt. If they offer to exchange a gift you don't like they are going over and above their legal responsibilities.

islandofsodor · 13/12/2007 00:17

You could of course go back to the friend who bought yor gift, tell them you don't like it and ask if they will return it and give you the cash instead.

Of course they may not stay your friend for long.

melpomene · 13/12/2007 19:57

Or sell it on eBay. BNWT Next sells quite well.
