To not think about Christmas until December ( lighthearted)

Dishwashersaurous · 05/11/2021 20:43

Am I the only person on mumsnet who doesn't really give any thought to Christmas until December. Clearly, judging by the number of threads, I'm in a minority. But please tell me that I'm not the only one!

I love watching the Christmas movies, i put the tree up in November and love planning.

It doesn’t bother the people i live with so how can it bother those with don’t on here?

Im watching a Christmas movie right now, in bed with a cup of tea.

balonsz · 06/11/2021 13:05

I do love Christmas though!

HeyFloof · 06/11/2021 13:17
@MRex of course shops will have stock all year round but the run up to Christmas is a key trading time so they always have new things to encourage spending. So I've bought Barbies that have come out in September or Lego that was launched in Oct, beauty products & clothes Oct/Nov etc. Although I know post pandemic things have launched earlier due to last yr & supply chain worries so they will probably have to stick with this new model.
But if I've already bought every else that my DC would enjoy/will need then I will probably manage to save enough money to then buy them the new thing that's only just come out. If I'm paying Christmas premium prices for the other stuff then I perhaps wouldn't.

Plus, for us Christmas is when we make most of our money What I can save from December and January pay is what carries us through the leaner months that follow when work isn't quite so abundant.

Proudboomer · 06/11/2021 13:22

I like to have all my gifts bought by the end of November then I only have to budget for food, drinks and any meals out from my last pay cheque until the new year.
My children are adults now to I don’t have to find the must have toy or find enough cheap but not rubbish bits to fill their Santa sacks.
This year my eldest is getting a new leather jacket. It arrived this week so I have plenty of time to swap it if the size was wrong or it wasn’t as nice as seen on the internet.
My youngest says he doesn’t need or want anything so he will get a few practical small gifts and money as he is saving for his house deposit.
I only three other people to buy for who are fairly easy to shop for.
I do still do my adult children and partners small Santa sacks but they contain practical stuff like deodorant, a pair of nice socks, facemasks( even my boys use face masks) and chocolate.

MRex · 06/11/2021 13:51

@balonsz

clothes are seasonal but by late summer the autumn/ winter stock is in.

They won't have all their a/w stock in as stores continually add newness. And specific party wear for Christmas doesn't launch in late summer.

Ah, I see. I'm just not the target for that stuff. I already have nice dresses, Christmas jumpers etc. Last year my Christmas day dress was 23 years old (my neighbour loved it and wanted to know where it was from).
Gouldengirl9 · 06/11/2021 13:54

I don't sort anything for Christmas until after our dds birthday on the 11th December.
She is 37 and has a different approach if she could have her tree up in August it won't be a day to soon.

Needhelp101 · 06/11/2021 13:55

In our house:
November 1-30= no Christmas (except buying a few gifts)
December 1st: CHHHRIIISSSSTTTTMAASSSS!!!

balonsz · 06/11/2021 14:38

@HeyFloof I completely understand the budgeting aspect for some at Christmas. I'm fortunate to not have to consider that.

Lightisnotwhite · 06/11/2021 19:33

For all my Christmas is for December only, DO NOT GO ON THE CHRISTMAS TOPIC BOARD.
For those that don’t know Reastie has a thread every year from about October where people post with the best bargains.
It .is .absolutely. fatal.

Just today I am £3 down buying Sharpie metallic markers I didn’t know I needed. It just gets worse ( or better) as the weeks get closer.

Sadiequeenofscots · 07/11/2021 22:01

Thanks to this thread I have now joined the fabulous Christmas board thread! I was tempted by the sharpies @Lightisnotwhite haha!! But managed to resist…have bought a couple of other things though. Now feeling quite smug and organised

lentilsforever · 07/11/2021 22:06

Could you link please?!

FangsForTheMemory · 07/11/2021 22:08

I hardly do Christmas because it starts in fucking August these days. My Christmas preparations (with the exception of buying some gifts online so I don't have to go Christmas shopping) will begin on Monday 20 December this year, when I post Christmas cards to far flung friends. On 23 December, I will go to Waitrose and buy a fillet steak and some duck legs (Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas day lunch). The evening of the same day I shall post Christmas cards to my neighbours. On Christmas Eve I'll sit down with a new book and chocolate and pretend I'm in Iceland. On Christmas day I will eat duck and Christmas pudding, go for a long walk and watch trash tv (there won't be anything else available). On Boxing Day I shall wake up and say 'thank goodness that's over for another year'.

CactusLemonSpice · 07/11/2021 22:10

You're thinking about it now, and making thread about it!

FangsForTheMemory · 07/11/2021 22:11

SHHHHH!

Lightisnotwhite · 07/11/2021 22:17

@lentilsforever
Here’s the Christmas bargains thread. Sorry in advance

There’s a genuinely a very useful thread every year in the Christmas Topic in what to buy the men in our lives to make up for it.

Lightisnotwhite · 07/11/2021 22:18

@FangsForTheMemory. That sounds bloody lovely.

lentilsforever · 08/11/2021 06:17

Thanks

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 08/11/2021 07:31

I love the build up and planning, but am not all that fussed about the actual day Grin

MinnieMountain · 08/11/2021 07:58

I have to this year as we’re going to my dad’s, so I’ve booked the train tickets and he’s already spent ages discussing food.

Generally I agree with you though.

Emille87 · 08/11/2021 07:59

I think you’re perfectly entitled to do Christmas exactly how you chose so no YANBU. Me personally I have a large extended family to boy for plus my dh and dc so I like to get a head start early on. I’ve bought most of my presents and wrapped some but I still have a few left to buy.

boobot1 · 08/11/2021 08:23

@Dishwashersaurous

Hey.

That makes sense. I was thinking more of people who say I bought x for aunty sue in July.

I suppose it depends what you're getting them. If its something generic like perfume or candles you can get them any time.
boobot1 · 08/11/2021 08:31

Well I love christmas, I had all ds presents bought and wrapped in September. Im changing my dec theme this year so have been buying bits for months. I also like crafts so have started with that too. Last year was so magical and we started a lot earlier than usual and put the trees up in November. Will wait till December 1st this yearGrin

lentilsforever · 08/11/2021 08:45

Decorations up mid December
But…
Lots of Christmas activities booked
Most presents for children bought

If you don’t want to get tat, I find the earlier the better. I have things personalised, shipped from US etc etc. And that takes time

FangsForTheMemory · 08/11/2021 12:06

The only places I really see Christmas mentioned are supermarkets and mumsnet.
