I have to put together themed group dances for eachof 15 classes for an end of year show, so i am looking over the last 10 or 14 years to see of there is anything that can be reused.
One is a native American themed dance to Running bear which afor anyone is basically about Romeo andJuliet type scenario between young lovers of different tribes. There would be no headdresses etc but the dance id quite sort of hoppy and arms folded like a native american. I;ll get them to where neutral coloures legging and T shirt and probably plaits in their hair.
Is that offensive / too much do you think?
YABU yes poor form
YANBU OK

If you're in the US, I would strongly not do it. In the UK there will be people who raise an eyebrow and it's probably not something I would encourage, but less of an issue.

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:50

Unless you have kids from Native American backgrounds would find something else to do…

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:52

ESP with the plaits/clothing etc
I’m sure you can find dances within the cultural mix of your kids to do - our even within the U.K…

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 05/11/2021 14:52

I wouldn't

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 05/11/2021 14:52

Absolutely not.

My heritage is not your entertainment.

Please also look at the meaning of plaits for us before casually throwing it in there as dress up.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 05/11/2021 14:53

Argh!!! Posted too soon. I wouldn't do it! It's no better than doing blackface or similar.

HeyMoana · 05/11/2021 14:54

I know from a recent conversation with parents and friends that this wouldn't go down well.

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:54

Basically I would not have ‘white’ kids doing dances from non-white cultures unless they have crossed over into general acceptability-
Ie kids trying out a Cossack dance =
Fine, Irish dancing, scoring dancing = fine

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:55

White kids doing an African war dance or rain dance etc = Not fine.
Why not look up
More modern dances from
Some of those cultures rather than sow
Thing that seems stereotypical

I am surprised plaits iare the thing you pick up on as its something very mainstream in uk schools

Without seeing the dance I'd err on likely to be offensive

Member984815 · 05/11/2021 14:58

I wouldn't

TirednWorried · 05/11/2021 14:58

Thank you . There seems to be a uninanmous consesnsus

Mainstream as a hairstyle, yes, but added in as an option when doing a themed dance is very different.

I think the difference here is that the plaits are deliberately part of a native American theming

We've had Irish dancing at school, all of them do it, should the black kids not be allowed to?

It’s different in the context that you’re talking about.
No one minds kids wearing plaits to school as a tidy/ anti getting nits thing!

Plaits have been mainstream in European culture for over a thousand years.

Braids not so much, and people are sensitive about those.

ftw163532 · 05/11/2021 15:01

Don't do that.

There is plaits and plaits when portraying a part in a play as a native American.
Surely you get that?
I smell BS.
Yes it would be offensive.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/11/2021 15:02

I probably wouldn't use a song about two young lovers throwing themselves into a river and drowning anyway...

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 15:02

‘We've had Irish dancing at school, all of them do it, should the black kids not be allowed to?’

If you read what I said it was that Irish dancing or ones that are generally acceptable are fine for ALL kids.
I wouldn’t enforce proper Irish dancing on anyone mind! It’s bloody hard.

I did. What's the differential?

Stupid ignorant comparison imo.
