Or is 10+ bits of homework a week too much?

DS in yr 7, missed lots of school so this might be perfectly normal. It’s not easy homework either, essays and pages and pages of work that will take him hours. He’s asd/pda but even if he wasn’t it seems like a lot?

My DD 14 was in tears last night revising for a physics test they'd been told about 2 days ago. She was upset because she'd stayed after school for a sport and a school project and was too tired to shower let alone study. She managed a bit so we'll see. She needs to manage her time better too much on the phone and out at the weekends imho

That’s tons! My year 7 has a few pieces a week to do, and the option to start it in class or during breaks sometimes.

DelphiniumBlue · 05/11/2021 12:53

This is the equivalent of 2 pieces of homework a night, fairly standard when I was at school.
If he doesn't do it, will he fall behind? What particular issues does he have with the homework....is it within his academic capacity, does he understand what he supposed to do? If there is a problem with that, speak to his form tutor and see what they can suggest. Maybe he needs to have different homework if he can't access it.
I think the trick is to regard it as part of an extended school day, so do it at the same time every day as a matter of course. Don't view it as cutting into his free time, regard that time as part of learning time.
It is a pain sometimes, you going to have to make a decision whether you get involved with his homework or let the school deal with it if he doesn't do it. It is his choice to comply or not with the school' s policies. Presumably they are aware of his conditions?

Our secondary school advises that will issue up to 2 hours work a night. They make the library available after school and run a homework club so kids can stay on and do it at school if they prefer.

How long does he spend outside of school on the homework?

GoingForAWalk · 05/11/2021 12:54

I told her not to worry to do what she could - prepare better in the future and if she fails then at least she knows what areas to study more and the world won't collapse on her if she fails. The latter comment didn't go down too well and I got scathing looks, more tears and my duvet was covered in her snotty tears Grin

It’s also not all due in at the same time - ie the reading is due once a week, the science will be a few days, the MFL will be for a vocal test at end of week. He’s never given anything that has to be in the next day.

GoingForAWalk · 05/11/2021 12:55

Contact his form tutor to explain he's overwhelmed

Year 7 homework is much less than yr 8/9 and onwards

Clementineapples · 05/11/2021 12:58

Just very black and white school is for school work. He does do what he can with lots of support. He can’t do self care so we start bedtime at 7 so I can help him wash, get organised, brush teeth etc so doesn’t leave a lot of time for just relaxing.

I think that’s a lot, I have a child in Year 8 and I would say he’s set on average 4 pieces of homework a week, although some may not be due in for a month if it’s a bigger project or an essay

If he is of the thinking that school work is for school, do they have a homework club he could attend and do it there?

Although I would mention that he’s getting so much and it’s beyond his capabilities and probably prioritise the core subjects

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/11/2021 13:07

Are school aware of his additional needs? It may be worth you checking in with the Pastoral team/SENCo that the teaching and subsequent homework has been streamed for his abilities.

Clementineapples · 05/11/2021 13:15

Yeah he has an ehcp and full time support and 1-2-1 etc

@Clementineapples

Yeah he has an ehcp and full time support and 1-2-1 etc
In that case I would definitely check whether the homework has been streamed for him, knowing that he wont have the 1.2.1 at home with him

Ok, thank you Smile

I've found the opposite. My DC school really stacks on the homework in year 7 but it subsides slightly in year 8. I think it is quite overwhelming when they've only had a few pieces per week in year 6. DD had 12 pieces of homework over one half term once which I thought was unreasonable.

She is year 11 now and the school are advocating 1-1.5 hrs revision as well as homework (which they said they wouldn't give)
