3 year old hates breakfast…

So much so, that he sometimes gags to the point of vomiting when it’s even mentioned.
He’ll have a smoothie for breakfast, sometimes a kid’s oatie bar thing (toddler range with low salt/sugar) but won’t have anything else.

The rest of the day he’s fussy, but nowhere near as bad as at breakfast.

It’s not a huge issue at the moment as I can give him a snack mid morning and give him his lunch accordingly. But when he starts nursery school next year and then reception the year after it’ll be more of an issue.
I don’t want him to be one of those kids who comes into school not having had breakfast. I worked in a school and I could see the difference it made to those who didn’t, they were always more lethargic and less likely to focus.

When I offered him some fruit and cereal this morning he literally gagged and vomited a little bit up. It’s bizarre! I’ve never come across anything like this before.

Never been wild on breakfast! Certainly not an early one.

When I was a child I would only eat the weirdest things in the morning, which my mum let me have.

I think the smoothy or oat bar is fine.

My ds is quite fussy in the mornings (well any time!) too. I let him have whatever reasonably healthy thing he’ll eat.

In my 20s I could face food until I’d been outside the house - was a bit tricky as I’d not want anything first thing and then starving on the way to work/ when I got there.

My daughter has Coeliac disease. Before her diagnosis she would get very worked up about meals (they were causing her pain but she was too young to realise that wasn’t normal for everyone). She would start worrying about the next meal hours before.
Has your child any symptoms of Coeliac? Very pale, anaemic, tired, mouth ulcers, poor growth, distended abdomen, shingles, a stubborn rash? My daughter had no gastrointestinal symptoms except tummy aches.

How much time between waking and breakfast? Ds hates breakfast and I try and avoid the guilt of him not having any when I take him to school but I can’t force feed him.

DS (3.5) is the same. At the minute he is taking a banana and a cup of milk in the morning. I'm happy enough with this. Even at weekends he's the same. He does eat lunch and afternoon snack. Come evening time he is ravenous. He eats a big dinner, bowl of yogurt and bowl of chopped up fruit. I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're offering something.

x2boys · 05/11/2021 15:28

My sin is kike this he won't eat untill he's been up an hour or so ,he goes to a special school and they give him toast etc at school I do let them know if he hasn't eaten anything I'm the same tbh I would rather not eat straight after getting up either

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/11/2021 15:39

My DS dislikes any "breakfast" food but will eat a cheese sandwich or pizza happily.

PumpkinPie2016 · 05/11/2021 15:57

I have never liked breakfast. Largely because I don't like milk. I also can't abide when cereal starts to go soggy or when toast is lukewarm.

Smoothie sounds good plus oaty bar thing.

Will he eat something other than 'breakfast' things? Ham sandwich, cheese and crackers? I quite like the mini soreen loaves too.

Any food can be a breakfast food :) if he really doesn’t want ANYthing, then I’d just get on with the day.

PleasantBirthday · 05/11/2021 16:05

My six year old is like this as well - in fact, she really only wants to eat between maybe 11 and 5. She doesn't want breakfast, she doesn't want dinner but she'll eat whatever she can get her hands on during the day It's hard to manage with school times.

I let her eat a bit of sandwich or maybe some rice in the mornings rather than stressing ordinary breakfast things too much because she does need something in her tummy before school. But some days, it's very much a losing battle.

Since coming in from school at 1.30 she's eaten a whole demi baguette with egg mayonnaise and salad. Don't know where she puts it!

Marcipex · 05/11/2021 16:07

Try the opposite- dry, crispy food. Toast and marmite is my favourite.
I loathe a bowl of cold slosh in the morning.

mogtheexcellent · 05/11/2021 16:11
