Could this be harmful to unborn baby?

Both kids and dh have both had the sickness bug that is going around at the moment so I'm not surprised I've succumbed now too. However I'm 18 weeks pregnant and worried that the constant retching, not eating and lack of fluids could be harmful to unborn baby.

I am trying to drink as much as I can but it keeps coming back up. I feel dreadful. Been going on since last night. Could it be dangerous?

I doubt it but if you are at all worried contact your me for reassurance x

Obvs that should have said mw!

dozyjosie · 04/11/2021 15:58

I mean I feel absolutely shocking but that's fairly normal for sickness bugs isn't it. I haven't started feeling baby move yet so can't even use that as an indicator either Sad

It’s unlikely considering the number of women who have Hyperemesis Gravidarum for nine months and go on to have healthy births. Baby will be taking everything it needs from you.

Hydration is the most important thing.
Keep trying with the fluids and if you are still worried contact MW.

No. Your body will provide for the baby first and you second. That will be part of the reason you feel so shocking.

If you can't keep fluids down then call your midwife as they may need to administer IV fluids. Not keeping down food isn't so much of an issue. The other thing is making sure you don't get a sustained high temp - keep an eye on it and take paracetamol to keep it down. Hope you feel better soon!

I'm 24 weeks and had similar bug around 7 weeks ago. Baby is fine, generally short term bugs aren't a massive problem as your body just compensates and gets baby what they need. If it goes on a long time or you notice signs of dehydration - skin issues, colour of wee changing etc then you need to get checked. But if in doubt call your midwife team. Xx

If you can up the fluids and are weeing okay, don’t worry too much about the food. If you’re not weeing as much despite drinking a bit more I would call your midwife. Try flat lemonade, cola etc. Get well soon Flowers

Try ice lollies, I found they really helped when I had food poisoning when I was pregnant.

LaikO · 04/11/2021 16:37

No, but if you can't keep fluids down, let your midwife know, to stop you dehydrating. Unfortunately you'll feel rubbish, but on the plus side baby will be fine!

I had hyperemesis 28 years ago .At 6 months pregnant my weight had dropped to 5 stone because I couldn't keep anything down. The doctor told me that babies were fantastic parasites and would take everything they needed . Baby did just that and was born fit and healthy at full term so don't worry for a second about being sick for a short while. All will be well.
On a practical level full sugar coke or some other pop of your choice will give you a blood sugar lift and having something in your tummy to throw up will make it less painful. Once the vomiting eases try peach slices in syrup. They slide down easily and you will absorb the sugar as they go down. Easy to vomit back up again if that happens.

Take lots of small sips of lukewarm water or something gentle and hydrating like coconut water instead of large drinks.

If it goes on more than 24 hours then contact a medical professional but up to then I think you're ok.

I had a horrific bug around 20 weeks with one of mine. Spent the morning worrying until a friend said “the reason you feel so shit is because the baby is grabbing all the remaining nutrients and leaving you with nothing”

Sciurus83 · 04/11/2021 19:41

Oh I feel you, this was me 2 days ago, 36 weeks and brought on Braxton Hicks. Baby will be ok, keep trying with fluids, give the midwife/maternity assessment a call for reassurance

Rhapus123 · 04/11/2021 19:46

Speak to a MW or 111 if you have any worries. At 20 weeks a bug caused me to need 9 bags of fluids after fainting on arrival at A & E. Baby absolutely fine, not even monitored during my stay (single room on geriatric ward). They had expected to give one bag and send me away. I was so huge after 2 days of fluids everyone was congratulating me whereas I wasn't showing when arrived. I could feel my son having much fun doing somersaults until I shrank back. Hope you are able to keep some fluids down soon. Don't attempt to eat.

Baby will be fine, I would be more worried about you!! ❤
