To refuse to walk DS home from CM in the freezing cold?

My day today to do the drop off and pick up f
from CM, but my car is temporarily out of action. DS is 10 months old and has recurrent chest infections. DH wanted me to walk home from the CM at 1800 with DS in the buggy - it's a good 15 minute walk and given it was -3c at 8am this morning likely to be a similar temp this evening. I refused and said we should switch days so DH does the pick up in his car. DH is no more busy than ususal today AFAIK. Now I'm the bad guy!

Whilst I'm sure that this isn't the case here, cold air really does affect my ds badly. He is asthmatic and has had part of his left lung removed. I will do everything that I can to keep him out of bitterly cold air.

There is nothing quite as frightening as a small child gasping for breath. I appreciate that most of your kids are fine in the cold and 'cold air won't cause chest-infections' but to a suseptible child, cold air can cause extremely distressing symptoms.

OrmIrian · 12/12/2007 12:17

YABU. Wrap him up warmly and don't worry. As an athsmatic with a very weak chest it's CH that gives me the greatest problems not cold weather.

maximummummy · 12/12/2007 12:24

YABU - AS I CHILDMINDER MYSELF - i very much doubt your ds stays in the house all day so if he's well enough to go to childcare he will be fine for a 15min walk this eve - just wrap him up warm - obviously it would be nicer for you not to have to do pickup and your dh could be more considerate but men eh?

rebelmum1 · 12/12/2007 12:31

As long as he well wrapped up, trick is to layer clothing, a raincover will keep him snug too. How did we survive without cars I do empathise when my dd was a baby i had to go out once to smarket close to bedtime around 6 and was lambasted by an old lady who said I shouldn't be out with dd in the cold..

mumeeee · 12/12/2007 12:35

YABU. Just make sure you wrap him up warmly and he will be fine.

The park was covered in frost and it was freeezing as we walked the 20mins to Tesco this morning. DD (9mo) was so bothered that she....fell asleep .

lizziemun · 12/12/2007 12:55

JUst wrap DS upwarm then put the raincover over him so he is in a bubble.

I walk dd1 to school everday with dd2 (from 1 wk old now 14wks) She has on her snowsuit over her babygrow a couple of blankets then the pram cover and if it is realy cold like this morning she has the rain cover over her. It takes about an hour each way.

williamsmummy · 12/12/2007 14:12

i would get a taxi, if at all possible.
esp if child asthmatic, the change from hot to cold air can cause problems.

How many chest infections, and when was last one?

TheIceQueen · 12/12/2007 14:18

The air won't do him any harm at all.

DS1 suffered recurrent chest infections as a baby (always when he got a cold....so every month basically). I used to make a point of actually taking him out for walks during the winter as I knew that the crisp (all be it very cold) air was better for him that the "heated" air in the house.

cyanarasamba · 12/12/2007 14:38

He has had 3 chest infections in the last 2 months, last one 2 weeks ago. He has an inhaler as he can be wheezy in between, although I don't think babies are diagnosed as asthamtic for a few years.

My DD is the same and the Doctor advised me to take her out in the cold air whnever possible - just to make sure she wrapped up warm. Walked her to school this am and walked her home. ALWAYS walked her to nursery regardless of the weather since she was 2 and never used her buggy , I just lifted her up for a while if she was tired.
She is as a consequence as fit as a butchers dog now and is coping much better with her chest. If she feels herself getting wheezy she actually asks to go outside!
So yes YABU in my opinion. Its a bit parky out there not the bleedin north pole .

TheIceQueen · 12/12/2007 17:17

yep DS1 used to have an inhaler too for use during the cold (as that was when he got the chest infection and wheezyness) - bloody nightmare - especially when he was first given it when he was tiny. Infact I was at the dr.s with him at least once a month for the first 18 months of his life - and no it wasn't PFB syndrome - he really was ill...

But still went out in the cold with him.

juuule · 12/12/2007 18:45

As long as they are wrapped up warm and it's not foggy, the colder the better for clearing chest of infection. That's what I was told.

pinetreedog · 12/12/2007 19:02

Just wrap him up. I used to walk a 6 mth old back from nursery at 6pm, 30 min walk. It's just because you're not used to it.

My mother never had a car.
I didn't until my children were 8 and 6.
DS2 has asthma.
We managed.

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 12/12/2007 19:21

He's far more likely to get another infection from going to the Childminder's in the first place.

15 mintutes properly wrapped up in a buggy will not do him any harm.

bubblepop · 12/12/2007 19:30

wrap him up well and stop worrying

soopermum1 · 12/12/2007 20:35

i walk DS to nursery and back every day (20 minutes each day, would be quicker if DS didn't dawdle)can't drive so go out in all weathers and have done so since he was a tiny baby (winter baby, couldn't handle the stress of his crying, lots of looooong walks in the dark with DS in his pram.)

i feel a 'lil but smug every day that i'm getting the exercise though i sure do need it

DS enjoys being outdoors and he now rides his bike, which makes the journey quicker.

as other said, wrap up and he'll be fine. in fact i'm sure in the olden days they used to positively encourage TB patients to wrap up and sit outside in freezing weather, so must be the best thing for the lungs.

however, have to say at weekends with DH and car are around, DS prefers the car, lazy 'lil sod
