To think 6 year olds play with dolls and prams still

Dd is 6, year 2. She's never really been into dolls and doll prams as such. She's always preferred barbies and animal toys! But plays with dolls occasionally.

But After school she's been playing with her dolls pram and dolly instead - all good with me, she's 6.

She wanted to take her dolls pram out the front for a walk. She opened the door and seen her class mate out playing over the road and she brought her pram right back in.

I asked her what's up and she said her friend would laugh at her. I've reassured her she's only 6 and I'm pretty certain I've seen said classmate out with a dolls pram herself!

I just feel heartbroken that a 6 year old child is
Too worried about what others will think to not play with her pram! 😪

Are kids really this cruel? I'm not sure what with give Dd the idea other kids would laugh at age.

August birthday too so youngest in her class!

My DD definitely still played with dollls at that age. Actually she's 11 now and got a new Barbie doll at the weekend.

wonderbegone · 02/11/2021 15:49

My daughter is 5 and tbh she hasn't played with dolls or prams for a years or so. More into barbies. Plenty of 6 year olds still play with dolls and prams. It's scary how quick children need to grow up these days.

DrManhattan · 02/11/2021 15:49

Some will, some won't. As you have already experienced. Some kids are old beyond their years, it is sad x

edenhills · 02/11/2021 15:50

Mine did.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 02/11/2021 15:52

My boys did. In fact i think it was good 6th birthday when ds1 saved up his birthday money to buy a new dolls pram as he was too tall for the cheapy stroller he had. he's 17 now and dolly is still in a drawer in his bedroom

BakedTattie · 02/11/2021 15:54

My 8 year old still loves her dolls

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/11/2021 15:54

dolls yes but I havent seen a 6 yr old pushing a toy pram out and about- sad that your LO has picked up on this

furbabymama87 · 02/11/2021 15:54

My girls don't but they have never been interested in baby dolls. One only likes Barbie type dolls and the other doesn't like any dolls.

Artie30 · 02/11/2021 15:54

Thanks all. I was never into dollies as a child - even though my mum bought me one every damn year and they never got played with. However, I did adore babies and played with them until 12-13 I believe!

Some do, some don’t. My 8 year old has never played with dolls, my 6 year old loves them. Having said that she’s more into dressing them up and doing their hair than taking them for walks etc.
I’ve seen their friends walking prams with dolls though.

Ozanj · 02/11/2021 15:56

Yes they should still be playing with toys and games. Unfortunately a lot of parents can’t afford to buy (or just don’t want to because screens are ‘easier’ for them to parent) and so manipulate kids into thinking they’re childish. It is such a shame. Tell your dd it’s normal and that if her friend teases her about her interests then she should tell the teacher because it isn’t something nice people do.

AliceAldridge · 02/11/2021 16:00

My DD still played with big dolls at 9/10.

UnbeatenMum · 02/11/2021 16:03

My 10yo has asked for a specific baby doll for Christmas. 12yo hasn't played with them for a while but definitely did at 6.

LakeShoreD · 02/11/2021 16:12

Just purely based on the kids I know I’d probably associate baby dolls more with toddler play- my 4YO and all of her friends seem to have outgrown them in favour of things like sylvanians and barbies but I definitely don’t think there’s anything wrong with it if that’s what your 6YO likes!

Marmite27 · 02/11/2021 16:15

My 6 year old is only a few weeks older than yours, but she’s year 1.

She plays with her pram occasionally, less than her younger sister. I agree 6 is fine!

Flowersintheattic2021 · 02/11/2021 16:17

My dd is 7 today and takes her double pram to park. She had a reborn monkey bought for her birthday

Siameasy · 02/11/2021 16:22

Mine is 6 YR2 and still does.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/11/2021 16:24

DS2 was still playing with his dolls at 6 but had stopped pushing the pram outside. I think he was still pushing the pram until he was 5 though.

toastofthetown · 02/11/2021 16:24

Some children are never interested in dolls. Some adults habe dolls and take them out in in prams. Most fall somewhere between the two.

I've just googled newborn monkeys. How cute 😍

I was a child who was never interested in dolls. Much to my mums annoyance 😅

My granddaughters are 9 and 7, and both still like to play with dolls, on occasion. They've got the usual toys, the eldest plays on her tablet a lot, etc., but they had the dolls out here last week

LBOCS2 · 02/11/2021 16:32

My eldest was never interested in dolls but loved playmobil. She's 9 now and will happily play with playmobil or smaller figurines.

My 5-rising 6yo still loves a baby doll and still plays with them a lot. She's asked for a bigger baby buggy (a double one!) for Christmas so she can push her babies around in them. We will probably get it for her as it's likely to get quite a bit of use still.

bookworm14 · 02/11/2021 16:34

My DD aged 6 (yr 2, august birthday) loves her doll’s pram and regularly takes it out to the park, library etc. She’s never had any nasty comments. Six is still really little.

hels71 · 02/11/2021 16:34

My DD was still taking the dolls pram out when she was 8.
