To want to start a side business?

I like making candles, I thought it might be a good way to earn a little extra income if I sell them. I have a background in marketing and design (though I'm a teacher now) so I can do the branding myself. Only issue is candles need 2 weeks to cure so I'd need to make a batch initially so I can ship out as soon as I get an order.

I'm finding it hard justifying the cost, about £350. I have it I'm just feeling so pessimistic, like of course it's a silly idea who would buy them you'll just end up with candles no one wants etc.

AIBU to take a risk and see how it goes? Have you ever done it?

I have a small side craft business. If you enjoy making the candles then give it a go. I got to the point of being up until 3 a.m. working to get my products out! So I have slowed down a bit and reminded myself that it was supposed to be a fun activity!

Have you seen this link? It might help. You’ll need insurance (you might have already included this in your £350 set up costs) and candles need to be carefully labelled.

Where would you sell? Etsy etc or fairs?

I have a side business. It's not my core job but it's fun!

I have a side business and it’s HARD to juggle. If you can get your branding/ marketing right it could work though.

I definitely think you should give it go.

But, before that, I think you should do more research eg target audience, your USP, competition, pricing etc. You sound understandably nervous and I think this may help you to decide where this is something you should pursue.

Good luck.

Make sure you get your costing right and don't expect to start making a profit for some time. Most new businesses will initially make a loss.

Have you had a good look at what other candle businesses are around and thought about what would be unique about yours?

If you enjoy it then of course give it a go.
