I have had really bad toothache for 10 days now.
I rang up last monday and got an energency apt for friday (yest)
She looked in my mouth and said the tooth looked fine but she couldnt x ray me as machine was broken and to go to their sister practice.
They had no emergency apts till wednesday next week.
I asked would they be treating it on wednesday and she said the apt is only 10 mins long and it wouldnt be long enough.
So im booked in for middle of november as no more emergency apts.
Im in so much pain.

That's pretty standard. They can't do much in 10 mins other than do an x-ray to check out the problem. Then bring you back for the actual treatment as soon as they have an appointment. It sucks when you are in pain but this is exactly what I had at my surgery.

Notashandyta · 30/10/2021 16:25

That's awful.

Can you ask for a prescription for stronger pain relief to get you through?

nararrt · 30/10/2021 16:26

Its just rubbish because i already waited for the emergency apt for her not to even do anything.
Then to go back then back again.
I just want it taking out now.

Is there not a dental hospital you can attend? if you phone 111 the should be able to advise you.

Spinderellaella · 30/10/2021 16:31

I had a similar problem. Ended up seeing another private dentist who prescribed me antibiotics for a few days before he could then do a root canal. It wasn't cheap but the relief from the pain of toothache was worth it. Good luck.
Ps, if you don't have it already, buy some oil of cloves em a pharmacy and dab it around the infected area. It's a god send and instant temporary relief

nararrt · 30/10/2021 16:32

Nothing at all near me.
I feel like ripping it out myself.
I'm taking paracetamol/ibuprofen etc etc and still aching

Not the point of the thread but if you are in serious dental pain I heartily recommend buying a tube of Orajel.

It's 10% benzocaine so properly numbs the gum area where the pain is coming from.

I've lost a crown recently and have had a long wait for treatment and honestly, this stuff has kept me same.

YANBU It sounds like a very poor effort, as you are actively in pain. That is just one of the reasons I don't use the NHS for dentistry and do 'pay as you go' to an experienced private dentist and hygienist. It is much more expensive but you would never be left in pain.
Are you sure 111 can't find you an emergency NHS appointment where they might actually have a working x-ray machine?

I'd expect NHS dentists to triage like the rest of the NHS. It is not reasonable to leave people in pain.
cosyto · 30/10/2021 23:17

Dentist here. You should be triaged and given an appointment urgently

Itsanothernamechange · 30/10/2021 23:23

Get some orajel. If you go to the pharmacy they have the 20% benzocaine one. I find the 10% isn't strong enough.

MargaretThursday · 30/10/2021 23:43

Often if you're in pain they can't treat you until swelling etc has gone down after a course of antibiotics.

However my dentist recommends the mouthwash Corsodyl if you start getting pain, you may be too far gone for it to help, but he says it will often hold back pain enough until they can treat.

ParkheadParadise · 30/10/2021 23:49

Nothing worse than toothache OP.
My dentist has seen patients throughout the pandemic for emergencies only.
I always use warm salted water when I have toothache and a cold compress on my cheek.

TrainspottingWelsh · 31/10/2021 00:01

Have you tried a pharmacist for stronger painkillers? I know that isn't the ideal solution but codeine would at least make the pain more tolerable.
