Hi, just changing sheets in guest room and saw this little beast (about 7mm).

Please tell me it’s not a bed bug!

This is a great guide on how to check for bed bugs, just to be sure.

FrankiesKnuckle · 30/10/2021 13:46

Definitely not a bed bug.
I've had the misfortune of bedbugs, the image of pulling out my headboard after I found one will haunt me forever.

Ulelia · 30/10/2021 13:50

Not a bedbug. Had them before. Horrific.

SpangoDweller · 30/10/2021 13:51

I think it might be - been several years since I had them but like @FrankiesKnuckle I have slightly blocked out the memories of that time as it was horrendous.

Giveaway is the smell. Is there a sweet, almondy smell?

shangelawasrobbed · 30/10/2021 13:53

Definitely not a bed bug. We had them in a flat we used to rent and they looked nothing like that. No idea what it is though!

SlateCoaster · 30/10/2021 13:56

That's definitely not a bed bug

MrsElf · 30/10/2021 13:59

Not a bed bug - cloth/feather eating larvae. Destroy and make sure you have lots of moth repellent about for a while!

Fraine · 30/10/2021 14:00

Thank you! Ok so sounds like not a bed bug but I think Cascade is right, it’s a carpet beetle 😭

Anyone had these? Are they just one step down dorm bed bugs? 😱

I'd say it was a carpet beetle.

GirlWithAGuitar · 30/10/2021 14:04

That’s a carpet beetle.

madisonbridges · 30/10/2021 14:15

Carpet beetles like natural fabrics and wood. The adults can fly so can move around the house to lay their eggs. They lay eggs in the spring so try and get rid of the larva over the winter. A good hoover, remembering to do the edges, round doors and window sills and under furnuture. Do insude your wardrobes too, just in case. Then get an insecticidal spray and go over everywhere. Repeat often.

dworky · 30/10/2021 14:25

Definitely not.

Fraine · 30/10/2021 15:03

Thank you! I’ve cleaned out the whole room and couldn’t see any more larvae or adult bugs. There doesn’t seem to be any damage to clothes or furnishings.

Is it possible to just have the one larva or am I kidding myself?

I find one of these approximately every 6-12 months, so don't panic!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/10/2021 15:17

That is a Wooly Bear (or baby carpet beetle).

Badnightguaranteed · 30/10/2021 15:17

Deffo not.

TheVolturi · 30/10/2021 15:20

We had our really old carpets replaced this year. I saw one of these little critters when I was cutting the carpet up. I sprayed around with a general insect spray and hoovered thoroughly before our hard floor was put down.

Fraine · 30/10/2021 17:22

Thanks, encouraging that it doesn’t necessarily mean an infestation!

I’ve found the source when I moved the bed away, the side of the bed had chest chairs galore and I found 6 in total!

Have vacuumed and will buy spray tomorrow!

I blame a hirsute male guest we had staying there, as they seemed to be enjoying frolicking in the hair 🤣

madisonbridges · 30/10/2021 17:36

It's a variegated carpet beetle so only lays once a year which is good. They normally lay about 40 eggs but it doesn't mean they'll all hatch. Hoovering and spraying.
