Won a beauty treatment ... Now I think I've been duped

Won a treatment at my local salon. Was delighted as I needed it badly.
The whole treatment was spent discussing the terrible state of my skin and all the products I needed.
Therapist said she'd put together a package for me ... I thought she was being generous.
I finished the treatment to be met by products for this terrible skin( I got two midge bites on my face yesterday )and was basically Pushed into parting with £100!
Before you say I could have said no thank you , I was genuinely shocked and was rail roaded into it .
AIBU.

Sorry, but you were taken for a mug (and I would have been too, in your position).

You won it? So they’d given it away for free? School raffle kind of scenario?
Of course they’re going to try and sell you things. It’s a business.
Think you’ve been a bit naive. Of course they shouldn’t have ‘railroaded’ you into buying things but as you said yourself just say no thanks.
There’s nothing to be done about it now.

RitaTheBeater · 29/10/2021 20:11

Oh no.
Sounds like these 'you have won a photoshoot' raffle prizes.

I know someone who 'won' a wedding venue. She has was railroaded into all sorts of stuff.

CrazyTimesAreOccurring · 29/10/2021 20:12

Can you take the stuff back for a refund?

LittleDandelionClock · 29/10/2021 20:13

You've been conned. Sorry @babyitscold May be a good idea to name and shame them on facebook.

jelly79 · 29/10/2021 20:14

Did you get a free treatment that you won? And then she has uphold you some products? Isn't that just business - how is that conning??

isthismylifenow · 29/10/2021 20:15

Ah, one of those prizes.

It's a bit like winning a 3 day timeshare holiday. But you have to attend bloody lectures for 3 days and get bullied into buying a holiday week.

I am a firm believer of you don't get something for nothing. There is usually always a catch.

jelly79 · 29/10/2021 20:16

@LittleDandelionClock name and shame a (possibly) small independent business? For what??

LawnFever · 29/10/2021 20:17

Annoying she was so pushy but you could’ve said no, they were bound to try and sell you stuff, they do the same at the hairdresser I just smile and say no thanks.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 29/10/2021 20:18

Aww it's a shame they ruined a nice treat for you. Arse holes.

LawnFever · 29/10/2021 20:18

@LittleDandelionClock

It’s hardly a con, she could’ve said no thanks, nobody nicked her cash card & handed over £100.
JumperandJacket · 29/10/2021 20:20

It’s not a con. It’s just a way to market the business. You were free to say no.

ChequerBoard · 29/10/2021 20:21

It's not a can at all. What was the value of the beauty treatment you had OP?

The therapy was just doing her job, recommending products and then showing you her recommendations so you could choose to buy any or all of them.

You could have said 'no thanks' - why didn't you?

Kuachui · 29/10/2021 20:44

to be fair that was obviously going to happen. Just like those photoshoot ones.
not a can just a smart business move, anyone can say no but its done to make you feel awkward

Laiste · 29/10/2021 20:44

Yeah, this really.

Freebie treatments are always also opportunities to upsell/advertise the merchanise..

Unless they were actually menacing you, you were free to say how interesting, thanks but no thanks.

If the products are upopened and you have the receipt you can go back and ask for a refund. Say you can't afford it/have changed your mind.

asteroommatus · 29/10/2021 20:48

Its not a con. You got teb treatment you won. And they sold you products afterwards.

Saying you were so shocked you parted with £100, is just absolving yourself of responsibility.

babyitscold · 29/10/2021 21:34

I've been going there for years so am a bit disappointed in them . There were two of them at the desk packing up the products . I was blind sided .

OP posts:
Smartiepants79 · 31/10/2021 20:40

You could still say no!
It’s not a con or scam! You got what you won and what you paid for.
You may have felt pressured into paying for them but that’s not quite the same thing.
If you really feel that strongly then I suggest you stop going and send them an email telling them why.

jelly79 · 01/11/2021 13:26

I just do t get this - how have you been blindsided.or why would you be disappointed? Surely you expected them to try and sell you something. Surely you just say no!!

Lockdownbear · 01/11/2021 13:32

Op pick one or two things depending on cost and take the rest back, "sorry I was looking at my bills and can't really afford this much, I'll maybe get x & y for Christmas"

It does sound a bit of a con to get you into high pressure sales. It's easy to get pressured into buying loads of stuff.

pasturesgreen · 01/11/2021 13:37

You weren't duped. The salon people were always going to try and push products on you, it's how these things work. You should have said thanks, but no.

hiptobeasquare · 01/11/2021 13:41

It doesn’t sound like a con to me. It just sounds like standard upselling. You could have said no.

Check the returns policy OP and see if you are able to return any of it.

Justmuddlingalong · 01/11/2021 13:42

More fool you.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 01/11/2021 13:47

If you got the free treatment - ie a facial and then accepted the upsell it's not a con, it's a standard business practise. If you've gone there for years go back and talk to them, I am sure they will refund unopened products.
