Baby safe sleep

63 replies

Sleepdeprivedanddesperate · 29/10/2021 00:12

Not an AIBU, but why does my baby only like to sleep in things that aren’t safe when unsupervised? My arms/chest, sleepyhead, car seat, bouncer, pram carry cot Sad

The carry cot (ocarro) is no different to the next to me crib we have, both firm mattresses etc so HOW DOES SHE KNOW?

Apparently the carry cot isn’t safe for unsupervised sleep due to airflow but I’m confused why because the top is uncovered? So desperate for some sleep but can’t bare the thought of trying to transfer her into her bed and her waking up Sad

Any tips?

who said those things werent safe for your baby to sleep in? ive yet to find a baby that could stay awake in any of them as for the prams carrycot well aslong as she is strapped in securely then that is the whole purpose of owning them

These are all fine, when baby is supervised, OP is talking about overnight so she can try and get some sleep herself. I absolutely would not leave a baby asleep in a car seat or baby/swing overnight as it can restrict airflow as they are scrunched up.

As for the sleepyhead, there has been no reported cases of a baby dying due to using them, so I’m unsure why everyone says they’re unsafe. Even states on their website they are safe for overnight sleep if in proper environment e.g. in a hard, firm cot.

Our baby slept really well in a ninipod

@Geneva1994 ok sorry didnt see that bit, but nothing wrong with putting the carrycot on the floor for them to sleep in, if you think back to when the midwives are giving out them packs and the box turns into a tiny cot, then a carrycot is far better than that and as long as the cot is secured or placed on the floor then there is no issue at all

@takenforgrantednana

I feel the same about the carry cot, but they specifically say not for unsupervised sleep due to airflow? But I honestly can’t see the problem Confused it would make my life much easier as DD slept fairly well in there last night but that was with me awake! I’m maybe being too cautious but I’m just trying to stick with the advice

honestly i cant see any harm whatsoever, sometimes you just have to ignore this so called advice and as long as you make sure that they cant fall or arent going to be suffocated then for the sake of a couple of hours sleep i cant see the problem. it one thing to listen to your health visitors advice, but when said health visitor is newly qualified and 19 years old and has no kids of her own i know i used to take what she had to say with a pinch of salt. i presume you have spoken to your mum and asked her about this? and what did she have to say?

oh and thats all it is, its advice! not dos and donts. a sleep deprived mum is more dangerous to have around than using a specifically designed carrycot for putting the baby into to sleep, whats the difference to th gold fish bowls they use in hospitals? the ones that thousands of babies have used the same mattersses and sleep perfectly fine on? absolutely none, now go and get your carrycot and put it on the floor next to your bed and go and get some much needed sleep

I think a lot of companies say these things to cover their backs too

My mum suggests everything which isn’t recommended and classed as safe. She used to wrap 2 large towels round me in my cot so I felt safe and secure Shock imagine the horror if that was suggested on here!

hahaha start listening to your mum more! because i would and have done exactly the same thing with my grand kids nd they have come to no harm at all

in fact i did the same with my own 3 kids and they are all adults and unharmed

and a lot of these companies say you cant do this and that because they want to scare the shit out of you into buying their products.

@VeraGriffin

Firstly - I am extremely sorry for your loss. Can’t even begin to imagine and it’s horrendous to try. Massive hug and I’m sorry.

Secondly, I really appreciate you offering more information. I am a fan of co sleeping (safely) and I had wanted to ask but not be offensive so I think it’s very generous of you to have provide more information. Thank you

First baby, I literally watched him sleep for six months, and went semi insane.

Second baby, brought home, stuck sleepyhead in between me and DH in bed (above covers), placed baby in it (swaddled, on back), each of us placed a hand on baby and conked out for about four hours.

It makes a huge difference. I would say go for it asap! Xx

Can anyone find any info to suggest a sleepyhead isn’t safe? I always thought they weren’t for overnight sleeping, but from what I can see on google, they are and are made from breathable material?

I can’t find any reason to suggest they aren’t safe. Our sleepyhead is a lifesaver as baby won’t sleep without it.
