To be amazed at the entitlement?

I advertised a toy on FB. In pristine condition for £1 (would normally sell new for £8).

Someone living in a very wealthy area has asked me to deliver the toy to them when they know it's a 15 mile round trip. They don't want to know now that I've suggested a few pounds delivery charge for petrol and my time. It would still make the toy half of what it would cost in the shops.

AIBU to be flabbergasted at how some people expect the world to owe them something when they're already getting an amazing deal?

They seem really miffed at my suggestion of a delivery charge. Why on earth would I deliver something for £1 when it would cost me more than that in petrol let alone my time? CF!!! I can't believe the gall of some people.

@Glitterandunicorns

I seem to recall reading a study whereby people were more likely to show up to buy your item if you sold it for £1 as opposed to giving it away for free because this gave the buyer the perception of getting a bargain rather than taking an item that someone didn't value enough to charge for it.

Ooooh I have never heard of that! Shock

LittleDandelionClock · 29/10/2021 12:14

Oddly, as has been said, the cheaper the item, the more entitlement from people goes up. It's like someone I know who works at a certain cheap hotel chain, said the most complaints (and the daftest ones) come from people who paid £29 for their room!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/10/2021 12:15

It's worse when you offer something for free ...
You get a 'drop 2 me 2mro at 2, wat els u got. Needz be perfect'

That really made me giggle - so absolutely spot on Grin

Little surprises me any more, but the ones who really get my goat are those who turn up with a sob story ... and it's almost invariably a poor old lass (a churchgoer of course) who's recently bereaved, a single mum who's just been in hospital or a family whose home has just been flooded/burnt out

Couldn't they at least be a bit more original??

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 29/10/2021 12:16

We've been on a declutter mission, so have sold/donated loads of stuff.

It's so often so awful. I don't bother with FBMP unless it's a low value item. I never get any interest in anything over £10, even if it's a massive bargain, so I mainly use it as a way to get people to collect stuff that I can't be bothered to take to charity.

Ebay is usually more successful, but I get so many chancers trying to get me to ship big, heavy hard to wrap stuff that's clearly listed as collection only, where the shipping would cost more than the item. Then there's the ones that do manage to collect and turn up in a wholly inappropriate vehicle. My favourite was the guy who bought our old 60 inch LCD TV, and turned up on a bicycle.

IMO, the 'drop 2 me 2mro wat else u got' brigade are the same ones who put 'u shud not ov bin taken - u are now with the angles' when someone dies. Wink

@FlamingElle

FBMP is getting bloody awful...

Bloke: How much is the item
Me: as advertised, it's £40
Bloke: it's £20
Me: no, it's definitely £40 and I'm selling it for my kid, no bartering. He's at Uni so if it doesn't sell here it sells there
Bloke: ok. What time can I collect

Woman: is the item still available?
Me: Yes. Are you interested?
Woman: no, it's too expensive

Fucking idiots.

I had one like the second example. I’ve got a specialist twins item. Brand new in packaging as didn’t get used for my boys. Woman looking for said item so I got pictures taken and told her price (1/3 off what I paid and close to what good condition second hand sells for) this is how conversation went

Me - it’s brand new and cost me £75; I’m looking for £50.
Her - oh, I got a well used one from a sling library and they only charged me £20. I don’t really want to pay more than £15 so can we agree on that?
Me - erm, no. I’m not prepared to take less than £50 for it as it’s no longer available for sale and I’m sure when I advertise it I’ll get that much.
Her - oh, well if my money isn’t good enough I’m not interested now!!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/10/2021 12:36

Do you think a lot of people browse FBMP when they've had a couple of alcoholic drinks?

ChargingBuck · 29/10/2021 12:36

It's gobsmacking innit.

Have you asked them precisely that question OP? - 'cos I would love to know what the CF would reply with :)

Shimy · 29/10/2021 12:38

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 GrinGrin, I would seem so.

Noshowlomo · 29/10/2021 12:39

The gall.. I can't imagine using my child to try and get money off something...!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/10/2021 12:49

It suggests 'pulling a fast one' is more common than perhaps we'd like to believe!

On a related note, I'd be fascinated to know how many people using self-service tills, sneak the odd thing through without paying!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 29/10/2021 12:54

Fair enough to ask (politely)

No it really isn't fair enough to turn up at someone's house to collect an item and then ask if they can have other items that they see! What planet do some people live on, no wonder there seem to be more and more CFs when some people think it's ok to do this?

If someone tried this with me they'd get a very hard stare and a 'no you can't fucking have it you twat'. The older I get the less tolerant I become because I know there are some vulnerable people out there who could be coerced by these people.

Shallwegoforawalk · 29/10/2021 12:56

@AudTheDeepMinded

Oh, and the woman that asked if I'd accept half price for a posh pair of wellies I'd advertised. 'Certainly, which one would you like?' was my response. Reader, she blocked me!

The only caveat to this is that I often have to drive from one side of town to the other. Sometimes when I list things I might say something like "collection only... but if you want me to deliver in xxxxx town then send me your postcode and I'll let you know a time if it suits me to drop of as I am passing near anyway."

I don't use self-service tills. Firstly I don't want to put supermarket staff out of a job, not least as I run a business and want to have customers with jobs. Secondly because I would feel morally obliged to steal every time as a way of getting back at the disgusting companies trying ther best to push up unemployment rates.
fromdownwest · 29/10/2021 13:02

I have given up on freecycle etc and now it goes to teh Tip.

  • Countless no shows
  • Will you deliver it tomororw at 3:33
  • Free washing machine - advertised as worn but working. Person turns up an house late, inspects it, says there are too many scratches on it, then wanted me to pay her fuel for time wasting

People are entitled beyond belief. Sadly, they have ruined it for all, so to the top it goes! much less stressful!

I too had this, the eyed up my lovely bench and asked for it. I said no, and she rolled her eyes. I asked if I could have her car, and she looked at me weird!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/10/2021 13:07

Do you reckon the CF ones are so sharp-elbowed they get in first every time? So the genuine buyers who may be polite enough to pay the agreed amount and show up on time never get a look-in?

I suspect so!

I advertised some furniture for free rather than go for a small payment. The amount of people that expected me to deliver it was incredible

If an ad doesn’t specify “no offers” then I think making an offer is fair enough

Maybe, but with the types most are commenting on it doesn't matter what you put. Huge fonts, capitals, rows of asterisks, it makes no difference - out they crawl with their rudeness and entitlement
