I advertised a toy on FB. In pristine condition for £1 (would normally sell new for £8).

Someone living in a very wealthy area has asked me to deliver the toy to them when they know it's a 15 mile round trip. They don't want to know now that I've suggested a few pounds delivery charge for petrol and my time. It would still make the toy half of what it would cost in the shops.

AIBU to be flabbergasted at how some people expect the world to owe them something when they're already getting an amazing deal?

They seem really miffed at my suggestion of a delivery charge. Why on earth would I deliver something for £1 when it would cost me more than that in petrol let alone my time? CF!!! I can't believe the gall of some people.

My worst FB Selling item was a pair of curtains from next they were something like £80 new so I advertised them for £15 they were in very good condition etc. Anyway a buyer messaged me and wanted to pay £10. Said no etc and then she agreed to the £15. She turned up but didn’t get out of the car but sent her two children up to my door to get them with £10. Putting her children that situation, couldn’t believe it Confused

@AStar98

A slight YABU selling an item for £1... moreso in the sense if you only want a nominal amount then why not donate the item to charity? I'm sure the money raised will go further than the £1 in your pocket.

Totally get your frustration with the 'delivery' element of it though, these types think everyone else is Amazon. And from personal experience if I was buying an item in good condition for a fraction of the cost then I would make sure I collected it before someone else did!

OP has clearly said that she needs the money to go towards her DC Christmas presents.
AutumnTreesBloom · 29/10/2021 08:24

We had this only last week.
We were selling something on FBMP for £50 when it was easily worth £200.
Someone came and said 'I'm not going to pay £50 but I'll give you £40'.
DP just said 'looks like you've had a wasted trip then mate' and opened the door for them to leave.
So they said 'ok ok I'll pay £50' and went on to pull a massive wad of £50 notes out of their pocket!!!

BirdyBirdyTweetTweet · 29/10/2021 08:25

@MichelleScarn

It's worse when you offer something for free.. You get a 'drop 2 me 2mro at 2, wat els u got. Needz be perfect'
I had this too 😂😂😂
traka · 29/10/2021 08:26

Do you not value your time more than £1?

You listed an item, had conversations with ppl and then made a post on here about it. We just bin things or go to the tip

Selling stuff is not worth the effort

RussianSpy101 · 29/10/2021 08:28

@traka FFS READ THE THREAD! OP needs the money. Jesus Christ.

Over the past six to eight weeks, we've been clearing my dad's house and I've put loads of stuff on Freecycle.

I had some lovely people take items of furniture, electricals, books etc. but some of them were bloody nuisances.

I got really fed up with the emails of

Poster: Can I have this, I love (whatever I had put on the listing)
Me: Yes, how soon can you collect?

Silence, never hear from them again ... Hmm

DecadentlyDecisive · 29/10/2021 08:30

The minute anyone starts trying to mess me around, knock me down etc. on FB Marketplace I say "No", if they persist I Block 'em.

Life's too short for arseholes.

Lonelymum21 · 29/10/2021 08:31

I advertised a toy that was easily worth £50 for £10 as it had lots of stickers stuck to it. I clearly stated in the advert that it was priced cheap as the stickers needed soaking off and that it was collection only. The first message I recieved was a lady informing me she would take it for £5 and I was to remove all stickers, clean it thoroughly because of Covid, and then deliver it to her house that evening Confused

RussianSpy101 · 29/10/2021 08:32

@80Dodgeballs do you have PayPal?

The privilege of some twats on this thread who can’t even be bothered to read all your posts is infuriating.

Pinkfairylights · 29/10/2021 08:35

Recently I was selling some weoghts and was waiting for someone to confirm collection details. In the meantime someone else contacted me and I arranged to sell them to her.

When I told first lady I'd sold them she was furious. Apparently I should have known that the reason for the delay was because she'd had to collect her partner from hospital after a long stay etc...

I'm sure a dusty set of lady weights would have eased the pain. FFS.

A friend of mine used to give stuff away from time to time, but because of that sort of nonsense, she started putting a low price on things, rather than advertising them as free. She said it cut out a lot of that pretend interest.

If you read OP's posts at least, you'll realise that the £1 WILL be better in her pocket. Lucky you to not have to worry about money

But it's not just about time. Waste is a huge issue. There's no need for everyone to keep buying product if it's available second hand.
80Dodgeballs · 29/10/2021 08:40

I have donated sackfuls of items to the charity shop but, on this occasion, I really could do with raising some money.

I'm going to readvertise and raise the price to see if they go. Maybe the perception is that there must be something wrong because they're too cheap!

YANBU. We've had some time wasters, including a woman who came round to collect a cupboard that we were selling for £20 (it was originally really quite expensive). We put the measurements on the advert, said to check car measurements before enquiring and that it was collection only. It was the kind of cupboard that you would be able to fit into a larger car but we made this clear.

Woman makes arrangements with us and comes round in a really small car and asks us to 'try' and get it in there Confused. Quite obviously won't fit. She then asks if we could deliver it to her. More or less told her to piss off. Waste of everyone's time. DH had taken time out of his work day and I was dealing with a screaming baby. Personally I think her broaching the topic of delivery was planned before she turned up.

The final straw of my patience was when she commented that it had scuffs on the bottom of the cupboard when we were letting it go for £20.

Some people are daft. I sold a Directors Desk on Gumtree, the type with 2 separate cupboard bases and a separate BIG flat top. Bloke not only turns up in a Ford Fiesta to collect it, he hasn't even bothered to remove the 2 bulky children's car seats so that be can lay the back seats down. The car is half full of stuff when he arrives...
TrickyD · 29/10/2021 08:40

A collection of wooden toys was on our local FBMP. Push along gangly thing, caterpillar etc, about five items. I messaged to ask if they were available but told no.

A few days later a message saying they had been let down, was I still interested. Yes please! We drove over straight away to pick them up, given a big bag, didn’t bother to check, and handed over the £5.

When we got home and saw the toys, all in perfect condition and just right for little DGS, I messaged saying thanks again and how pleased we were.

She replied that it was a change to deal with lovely people like us.

I don't go on the sites where you can charge for items, I though Freecycle would be the easiest and best way to get rid of stuff.

An awful lot went to charity shops too but thankfully the house completed yesterday so I don't really have anything else to put on the site.

Hooray! Grin

@smoko

Hear you OP, this kind of cheeky fuckery gets my goat!

Recently I sold a vintage stained glass front door on FB for $100 - worth a fair bit more, but had found it by the roadside & enjoy putting up a good deal which is a quick sell in an hour or two Grin

Had a message from someone offering $50

Messaged back & said no, price firm

Then they message back to offer the asking price!

So text them back & said no, on principle I won’t sell it to you now, because you’ve taken the piss with such a lowball offer.

They apologised & offered $150!

I still said no - based on your rudeness to offer such a low asking price when you can obviously afford me pay more, am even less inclined to sell to someone like you.

Think people like this need to be called out on their cheapskate attitude.

I have no words. Not about their attitude. Yours.
Fl0w3ry · 29/10/2021 08:44

And the time wasters who think you have nothing better to do than wait in for 2 hours, then they don’t show up! Or they tell you a time then show up an hour later.
It’s nothing but a headache selling stuff. If I could drive I would take the lot to the tip. Even charity shops have ridiculously high standards and don’t accept a lot of things these days.

Pinkfairylights · 29/10/2021 08:46

On the flip side - I'd been let down on collecting a decorated mini bin.a last was coming to pick up a bedside light for her daughter and I asked if she'd like the bin for free. Her daughter was thrilled.

PaddingtonStareBare · 29/10/2021 08:47

It's full of time wasters 🙄.
I'm selling some of DD's items all of which are in perfect working order.
Up for a very reasonable price, I had loads of messages just saying '£5?' (advertised for £20)
I don't even reply to them
Then there is the genius who wants me wait in all day but doesn't know when she's coming 🙄, then got shitty that I wouldn't hold it for her.
They're going to the charity shop next week, I can't be arsed anymore.

AudTheDeepMinded · 29/10/2021 08:47

I agree with collection only and cash on collection. I've had some right oddballs though. One woman that said she'd be at mine between 7-8 pm. I said no later as have small children I'm putting to bed. She messaged me at ten to 8 saying she'd forgotten (? she'd only made the arrangement that day) and was eating her dinner, could she still come, but she had no cash so could she transfer. No, cash only please. Sad little message about how she'd have to go to a cash point on the way over. Well, yes! Eventually turned up with exceedingly dodgy looking bloke at nearly 9pm. Was left feeling that I'd rather they didn't know where I lived...

AudTheDeepMinded · 29/10/2021 08:48

Oh, and the woman that asked if I'd accept half price for a posh pair of wellies I'd advertised. 'Certainly, which one would you like?' was my response. Reader, she blocked me!

CharityDingle · 29/10/2021 08:48

Grin I'm sure they would! Grin

I'm always amused too, at the stories people spin, particularly to win something on Facebook, for example. 'It was my great grandmother's dying wish that I should win a box of chocolates...'

I think some have a tale at the ready, they barely look at what is the offer or prize, before posting. It's a case of oh it's free, I must have it...
