To not use my personal laptop for work?

I'm leaving my current job tomorrow and they are sending a courier to pick up the laptop at lunchtime. But I've just been asked today if I can login using my own laptop to work in the afternoon . Aibu to say no? I'd need to set up email just for 4 hours. I asked if they could collect the laptop later or next week and was told no it needs to be back in the head office by 5 tomorrow. Should I just stop work when they collect it? It seems logical to me.

Are they using Office365? If so, you wouldn't necessarily need to set anything up.

That said, I'd probably be nodding, smiling and counting down the seconds, whilst doing "notmuch". What can they do about it? You've left.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 28/10/2021 19:41

Yep if they want the laptop at that time that's when you stop working. At this stage what are they going to do about it?

thirstyformore · 28/10/2021 19:42

Just say you don't have one. I don't have my own laptop (we have a couple in the household but none are mine and would quite likely be in use at any given time!).

icedcoffees · 28/10/2021 19:45

YANBU. If they insist on it going back then, that's their tough luck.

snackess · 28/10/2021 19:46

Yep work stops when they collect the laptop. It's their choice. Not your problem.

Lochnessgiraffe · 28/10/2021 19:49

Glad I'm not being difficult. It just seems silly to login again when I can just not work

I wouldn't have the appropriate security measures on my personal laptop. I struggle to think why they can't either delay collection or let you finish when they collect

Larryyourwaiter · 28/10/2021 20:16

You could have just said. I don’t have one/it’s not working. What would they do then?

tanstaafl · 28/10/2021 20:26

But your laptop is broke? Wink
Or it’s upgrading to Windows 11?

Lochnessgiraffe · 28/10/2021 20:37

palavah I wondered that too but apparently it needs to be back in the office by the time I finish.
Might just log off and do nothing. What can they really do?

I wouldn’t do any work on my personal laptop. It’s a security risk surely?

Wiredforsound · 28/10/2021 20:50

Let them take it. Then you’re done. I suspect there’s a reason they won’t let you keep it past your end date.

NewlyGranny · 28/10/2021 20:50

Work are CFs. Shut down and forget them.

LawnFever · 28/10/2021 20:55

Well I don’t even have a personal laptop, not everyone does!

I’d just say no, unless they delay the work laptop being picked up.

Depends on how it's set up. We (NHS) can work securely via remote desktop on our personal laptops, it's totally normal and very secure.
Whitefire · 28/10/2021 22:23

If the expectation is that you need a work laptop then once that has gone you can no longer work.

holidaynearlyover · 28/10/2021 22:25

Definitely don't do it, what if you didn't have a personal laptop or it wasn't working, what would they expect then?

Palavah · 28/10/2021 22:49

@Lochnessgiraffe

Exactly. Tell them it's not working properly.
