Progesterone denied by GP ?is this allowed?

Lolaflores4156 · 28/10/2021 17:59

Dear ladies,
I have been diagnosed with small polyps (benign result after biopsy).
I also have had several miscarriages and was prescribed progesterone and baby aspirin with my second child at my hospital.

...My unhelpful GP said that she would not prescribe progesterone should I fall pregnant again. Only a consultant could........but if I'm not already under the consultants radar , I am not referred as not pregnant .....when would I get the prescription, as time is of the essence?

Can I walk into a private gp and pay for progesterone?

Sorry I'm very stressed about this all

Many thanks x

I got my progesterone from an ivf clinic. Wonder if one could help you?

I wonder if you could be referred to a gynaecologist now?

MojoJojo71 · 28/10/2021 18:12

You can ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist for a pre-conception appointment and then they can write a letter to the GP instructing them to prescribe the progesterone when the time comes.

Best of luck Flowers

Failing that you may even be able to do it via the community midwife. I used to work on the community and I’ve referred women for preconception appointments before but that was probably about 10 years ago

Probably the best way. The GP wont know the doses or how to start

Can you not get in touch with consultant you were under?

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/10/2021 18:49

Our local early pregnancy assessment unit agreed to scan me at 6 weeks due to several previous losses, to check in right place etc. They prescribed progesterone and aspirin.
Because the research and evidence isn't conclusive yet for progesterone use where you aren't yet bleeding (i think the two studies were PRISM & PROMISE), I think it's a bit of a lottery as to which clinics do/don't.

The GP is allowed to refuse to prescribe anything that is outside of their remit/ sphere of competence- and progesterone is definitely something they aren’t commissioned to do.
I’d suggest asking to be referred for preconception counselling, going private, or seeking swift referral very early in next pregnancy.
