To ask for your parking help?

I'm starting a new job and there is no parking provided. I'm disabled and a blue badge holder.

There are double yellow lines up the entire street my new work is on. I can park on double yellows but only for 3 hrs and no return for 1hr.

I will be working 8.30ish to 5.30pm. The other streets nearby all have a sign like this one. Am I allowed to park in these on-street bays all day with a blue badge? Thanks so much, I'm totally stressing about this now!

each city has their own rules on resident bay and timed stays, for example im in leeds and could park all day but thats not universal, have you looked at the local council website?

DoNotGetADog · 28/10/2021 14:53

I would say no - it’s residents permit parking only.

Suspiciousmind20 · 28/10/2021 14:54

I don’t know OP, sorry. But if that’s your only option then ethically and morally it would be wrong to ticket you. Could you leave your blue badge out and note to explain? Any traffic warden giving you a ticket would have to be an absolute &@“£%#*!

DoNotGetADog · 28/10/2021 14:54

I mean no longer than 1 hour if you don’t have the permit.

BurntO · 28/10/2021 14:56

I don’t think you will be able to park for more than 3 hours OP. Does your new employer have any suggestions?

Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that though - I see cars with blue badges get tickets outside my work nearly every day.
msbevvy · 28/10/2021 14:59

It depends on the borough. Where I live we have similar signs but blue badge holders can park there for as long as they want.

RNBrie · 28/10/2021 15:03

Where I live blue badge holders can park in permit holders bays. Call the council and ask!

jessieca · 28/10/2021 15:25

My local council website points to the gov website which says:

On-street parking areas where all motorists can park for free but only for a limited time
Badge holders may park for free and generally without time limit. However, if signs show there is also a time limit for badge holders, you must comply with the time limit shown and display your parking clock set to show the quarter hour period when you arrived at the bay.

So I think I might be ok but really not sure as I've only ever parked all day before in work car parks or designated disabled bays for on-street.

My new employer doesn't know I'm disabled yet. I've had a previous job offer withdrawn days before starting when I enquired about disabled parking. I can't afford to loose this job.

I do know there is no parking provision at all for anyone, they don't have spaces hidden away anywhere.

In many resident only zones you can use a blue badge to park with a time limit (unless stated), however this will vary by local authority.

If you contact the parking team at the local council, with a note of the road and parking zone, they should be able to give you a more definite answer.

Good luck with your new job!

loudbatperson · 28/10/2021 15:33

i meant to say park without a time limit

That reads to me that you would be OK parking there without a time limit.
jessieca · 28/10/2021 15:40

There is no parking team at my council to advise on this. I've just found the following on their website, which contradicts the gov website I think:

There is no parking exemption for Blue Badge holders where signs show the area is restricted to permit holders. There is also no exemption in a permit bay where the signs state parking is also allowed for a limited time.

What do you think? I'm not going to be able to park, am I?

If you’re really stuck could you look at one of those websites where you rent out peoples drives?

I do that when I’m visiting hospitals etc

PheasantsNest · 28/10/2021 15:47

There must be a parking team at your council. They deal with the wardens and fines.

Great idea, thank you. I'm actually registered with one and put my own drive on their for free as we live near a hospital. Never had anyone take me up on it though.

I phoned the council and they said there was no one to answer questions like this from the public, I just have to use their website or CAB if I can't access it or understand it. Not very helpful at all.

Good luck OP, it sounds really ambiguous, could you contact a local councillor directly to ask them to look into it for you? Seems a shame you have to pay for parking if your blue badge entities you to park there for free.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/10/2021 16:32

That's a bugger. The 2 towns nearest to me, one specifies that BB holders can park in shared use bays. The other council says only in x Town. You would not know that you could or couldn't based on signs.
I think you should ask your MP to investigate. Its a barrier to employment.

womaninatightspot · 28/10/2021 16:34

In our area we have similar signs but having asked a traffic warden if you've a blue badge you can park for as long as you like.

BackAwayFatty · 28/10/2021 16:42

I had something similar happen with new employment & it was such a stress in the run up to starting.

The info wasn't clear at all on the council website. In the end, I posted in a local forum for the area & other residents with blue badges advised.

Congrats on the new job 🙂

GrandOld · 28/10/2021 16:42

OP I asked a local parking warden when I was confused about parking. Saw him one day and stopped to ask.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 28/10/2021 16:46

There is no parking exemption for Blue Badge holders where signs show the area is restricted to permit holders. There is also no exemption in a permit bay where the signs state parking is also allowed for a limited time.

If this is on the relevant council's website, then this trumps all other sites. So on the basis of the above, no, you cannot park there for more than one hour. Sorry.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 28/10/2021 16:46

You could try contacting your blue badge department at the council, ours can be helpful at times, I’ve also cornered a traffic warden at other times and they are usually surprisingly helpful too

Are there any single yellow lines nearby? They are unrestricted for blue badges
