Trick or treat?

Ia anyone taking their kids trick or treating this year? Got a 10 year old desperate to go but not many people in our area have decorated so assuming it because they don't want randoms turning up. There would usually be a few houses done up but very quiet this year. Would imagine due to covid? I must preface that I hate trick or treating so looking for any excuse to get out of it Grin

Most people won't decorate until Sunday I should think. I'd wait and see. Maybe take them out for a little while if there are a few places lit up. We're expecting the usual deluge but haven't decorated yet.

Never have never will. But we always decorate as my kids love handing out sweets and seeing the costumes. We won't bother until the weekend.

I am unsure what to do! Last year we celebrated Halloween indoors. Dressed up, decorated the house, did games and had special food. My children really want to go out with their friends! My eldest is now a teenager and his friends are talking about meeting up in soneone’s house (sounds like a party?). My youngest is desperate to be out with her friends trick or treating as we have done in all other years apart from last year. It gets very crowded where we are though so I would reallyrather not when covid is spreading!

I think 10 is old enough to simply tell them just that - that most houses do not have pumpkins or decorations outside and therefore do not want trick or treaters.

Offer a pizza and scary film night.

Angel2702 · 28/10/2021 11:53

Most people only decorate on the day. I don’t put anything outside before 31st. We haven’t even carved our pumpkins yet.

DyingForACuppa · 28/10/2021 12:01

I was going to decorate to get in the mood for Halloween but then I saw some people on my local Facebook group saying they were planning on trick or treating on Saturday as 'sunday is a school night' Hmm. I don't want to deal with trick or treaters on multiple days, so I'm now just decorating on Sunday.

TurnUpTurnip · 28/10/2021 12:06

Don’t most only do it on the day? They do round here I’ve only seen one house do it before since I’ve lived here 6 years

DementedPanda · 28/10/2021 12:08

My dc have decorated as they enjoy it. I'm now wondering if I should take everything down as I definately don't want my door knocking every 5 mins. Mine aren't trick or treating this year. We are doing pumpkins and Halloween games with friends.

MrsColon · 28/10/2021 12:10

Trick or treating is outdoors so very unlikely to spread the virus.

A lot of folk don't decorate till Halloween itself, just look for decorations or pumpkins on the night.

butteriesplease · 28/10/2021 12:12

well, it's guising not trick or treating! anyways, we aren't, as weather will be rubbish and DS3 reckons he's too old! Plus I can't be bothered making up bags of treats. We will have a spooky film and some halloween-y treats. Up here, guisers only knock if you have some visible decorations.

We only ever decorated on the day. Halloween is a strictly 1 day event as far as I'm concerned.
Mustreadabook · 28/10/2021 12:21

Yes the children are desperate to go. I think that there will be decorations out on the night. It doesn’t seem too covidy to me it’s just walking around outside mostly.

Biancadelrioisback · 28/10/2021 12:45

I decorate for the Halloween weekend. So everything will come out on Friday.
By everything I mean the crafts and decs that DS makes and orange fairlights...oh and pumpkins. Usually I'll carve 2 and we have another 2 we put stickers on and eat after.

I'm going to take DS out on Sunday early evening as he's never done it before but absolutely desperate to.

Hemingwayscats · 28/10/2021 12:48

Yup, we’re going this year and looking forward to it. It’s a big event where we live and most people decorate, some go all out. Some have had decorations up for a week or two already but we don’t decorate until the day before because tomorrow is DS’s birthday so obvs more important. We only ever knock on decorated houses.

MargosKaftan · 28/10/2021 13:13

We'll decorate this year on Saturday probably. I would say that most people do it at the weekend.

If your ds is 10, assume year 5 or 6, so can you contact the parents of a few classmates who live nearby and ask if they are up for trick or treat visitors and just go to their houses?

We also put a bowl out with a "help yourself but please don't ring the bell" note once we've had enough, and in the last 10 years of doing that, we've not had anyone ring once the sign has gone out. Those who just don't want to get up and down for trick or treaters, try that.

Hobbesmanc · 28/10/2021 14:56

Do you think Saturday will be busy? I love to decorate- and welcome the kids but we will be out Saturday night. Hoping families will still come Sunday

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/10/2021 15:05

Yes, I'm absolutely taking DS as he missed out last year. Obviously we will only go for decorated houses.

Insomniacexpress · 28/10/2021 15:25

Yes- DS is really looking forward to it

JauntyJinty · 28/10/2021 15:30

Take him. Even if only a few houses are partcipiating that will still be fun, and you can make it up with some junk food and a film later. But I suspect as others have said most people will decorate on the day and there will be as many people as most years

TheKeatingFive · 28/10/2021 15:31

God yes, the kids can't wait 🎃
