It's 6pm and the sky looks like this (pic).

I remember it's usually pitch black by 4pm this time of year. AIBU to think it's odd?

Even I would be hard-pressed to try and blame this one on Brexit or something

Not until December.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/10/2021 20:38

It depends where you live.

I'm in London and it's never pitch black by 4pm ime. Getting very dark in the depths of winter, sure, post sun-down, but not the dead of night yet.

QueenofLouisiana · 27/10/2021 20:45

We commented that autumn had arrived here in the last few days- at the weekend it was still very green but by today there are a lot more red and yellow leaves.

It hasn't got colder, but windier.

Pumpkinstace · 27/10/2021 20:54

It's normal

We go to scarefest every year for October to ride rides on the dark.

It shuts at 9pm and we always try to go after the clock change so we get 2.5 hours in the dark and not just 1.5.

AlphabetAerobics · 27/10/2021 21:00

Grin it’ll be pitch black for me by 4 next week.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/10/2021 21:29

It’s not pitch dark at 4pm in Kent even in December/January (unless the weather is at its worst).

Privatesector · 27/10/2021 21:42

Just about pitch black at 4pm on 20th Dec - north home counties

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 27/10/2021 21:51

You're absolutely right. There is a shortage of darkness right now due to supply chain issues, lack of HGV drivers and remaining social distancing measures.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 27/10/2021 21:54

If it was pitch black in October before the clocks go back, surely it would be dark by about 2.30 in December?

Global brightening. It's the next big thing.

Said to my husband just this evening, it feels really late but it’s not even six o’clock. So, disagree. Sorry.

Tiffbiff · 27/10/2021 22:25

Yes OP! Glad I’m Not the only one! We were talking about something that happened this time last year ( as in the exact date) and it was pitch black outside at 6pm but looked similar to your picture!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 27/10/2021 22:27

Clocks haven’t changed yet-wait till after Sunday!

nannybeach · 27/10/2021 22:32

Depends where you live,I'm in the sunny SE, obviously on a sunny day,it will be lighter later. Green leaves perfectly normal here at this time. You have to remember, spring was late, so the seasons are about 6 weeks behind

You're misremembering. Once the clocks go back, it gets dark around 5.30pm at first. It's only truly dark at 4pm in December.

You so didn't! It's just not possible

BogRollBOGOF · 27/10/2021 23:03

@RustyBear

Last year the clocks went back on the 25th, the earliest possible date for the last Sunday in October. This year, it's the latest possible date, the 31st, so it's nearly a week later this year. So it will be lighter now than the same date and time last year.
This. It often will be darker on 27th October if we are past the final weekend and the clocks have already changed.

The weather has been fairly mild and many trees react to the first frosts.

Another person who is apparently unaware that the clocks go back on the last weekend in October, so on different days each year.

Seriously - how have you never noticed this? How did you manage to spend time 'talking' about it without someone pointing this out?

AlphabetAerobics · 28/10/2021 05:52

@DanielRicciardosSmile it does - you should probably fire up google maps and check out a map of the uk. It’ll blow your mind.

Whereismumhiding3 · 28/10/2021 06:00

It's starting to get dark here at 6pm but then we don't live in London nor a city where there's a lot of artificial light

It'll soon be dark early due to clocks going back. But also you don't want it dark too early as by mid December (when it is darkest earliest) it'll be getting dark at 4pm when DCs are waking home from school still and before work day ends. I love the long light evenings of summer so please don't wish it away sooner OP!
