Is this a scam?

I posted months ago about a Royal Mail insufficient postage card I received abs that was he gone but people on here mentioned there was a scam.

Anyway I received a customs notice the other day and put it to one side as I wasn't sure what it was but later received a message from a friend in the US saying she had sent something. I cannot find the notice the notice now so haven't paid the customs fee.

Just now I have seen I have a text asking me to pay a fee for a PO redelivery and I have immediately clicked on it and put in my card details (I am up feeding baby). It was only £2.10 I think but now what do I do?

I have just frozen my card but is it too late?

I only did it because I am aware of this item being held by customs and was relieved to get the text but I don't think this was the genuine PO site

@TotallySuper I called natwest in the morning and they cancelled the card. Said there should be no issue since card has been cancelled and they don't have my bank details.

New card has arrived which is good!

I was hearing about this scam on the radio recently - it is not so much the identity theft thing you need to be worried about - but later contact. You are on a list now and they have some of your details - people who have been caught in this scam have been contacted a few days/weeks later by people pretending to be from the bank about unexpected activity - but that was the fraudsters. www.independent.co.uk/life-style/royal-mail-scam-common-signs-b1821820.html?r=83280

It's not just Royal Mail "missed deliveries" - if I get another message pretending to be from Yodel, Hermes, Amazon, etc, I'll scream

I'm only surprised it took so long for them to start, with folk ordering more online during the lockdowns, but of course now there's a lot of buying for Christmas and along the slime comes Hmm

Well done for acting so quickly. I'm sorry you didn't realise it sooner, but honestly it is unfortunately too easy to get caught up in these scams. Especially when you are too busy and tired to double check everything.

For future reference, there are very few people or institutions who need to know your real date of birth. Most of the time, the date of birth entry serves to confirm only that you are 18 or older. The Royal Mail definitely does not need your real birthday.

Get into the habit of adding or subtracting between 1 and 11 numbers from your real date of birth and use that instead unless it's someone who legitimately needs your date of birth. Which is in any case, unlikely to be requested by an unsolicited text.

So if your birthday is the 11th of March 1988, you subtract 2 across the full date and get 9 January 1986 and then use that every time. I've been doing something similar for 20 years and the one time I clicked on a dodgy link and put in my date of birth before I started thinking hang on, is this legit? at least I hadn't used my real birthday.

If the date of birth is only for age verification, I often just pick the oldest available date. So Steam has a 121 year old looking at a fair few PC games thanks to me.

There was an article in the guardian about these scams - people were targeted again in months to come by frausters pretending to be from the bank or action fraud etc so be really careful in the future. They have details like your postcode or maybe DOB so new messages can look more legitimate.

Sorry PP beat me to it!

slashlover · 30/10/2021 00:23

Forward the text to 7726 (spells SPAM), all the phone companies collaborate and will cancel the number if enough people report it.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 30/10/2021 08:54

Thank you I have forwarded the text

And will be vigilant about phone calls
