To take nine month old to hospital?

I know I'm probably not but I need reassurance and if I am bu then being told to get a grip - I took my little boy up to the hospital yesterday as I couldn't get a GP appointment and he was diagnosed with a viral infection and I felt awful going to the hospital with how strained the nhs is but my son comes first and I needed to make sure he was okay, my mum had him today and reported when I got home at 5 that his nappies have been quite dry, he only had little wees but was eating and drinking okay but refused calpol at 3pm and that he'd been really fussy all day but had a nap at 3ish and woke up when I got home, I changed his nappy and there was no wee but he had diarrhoea - he's refusing his bottle, food, water and etc literally everything but doesn't seem to have a temp but feels really warm and I'm really scared he's dehydrated or will be (it's really not like him to refuse food, he's usually a little food monster) but he's really not himself and with his age I don't really want to wait and see because baby's can go down hill so quickly, am I making the right call or being a precious first time mum?

Hmm, he could just be teething - feeling warm, off food etc. But you know him best and if he's really out of sorts then I'd take him in.

Babies can go downhill quickly and you'd never forgive yourself if it was something serious and you didn't take him in.

A lot of babies refuse calpol though, are you using the syringe that comes with it. I just put it into the inside of the cheek and dispense.

Also offer sips of water every 5-10 mins or so. Hope little one feels better soon x

Thank you, he doesn't seem to be teething - even when he is - it's not like this if that makes sense.

He's a really weird baby haha and loves being fed anything even calpol, he'll have it all and then want more.

I tried to give him some water but he's just letting it drip back out of his mouth which is why I'm so worried but thank you for replying x

Mother's instinct, don't ignore it.
The dry nappies are enough to go in after being told it's viral.
He will be fine without food for afew days it's liquid you need to get into him.
I offer mine weak squash when he isn't well to get some in, ice lollies, watermelon.
Sometimes have to be cruel to be kind regarding Calpol, wrap in a towel and put into his mouth. It's for his own good and will soon forget it.

When my were young, an A&E doctor once told me they prefer to see a well baby than to not see a sick one.

girlmom21 · 26/10/2021 18:16

Are his lips dry? Does he seem lethargic?
How many bouts of diarrhoea has he had? If it's just the 1 I'd call 111.

Henio · 26/10/2021 18:19

You should take him if you feel you need too, even if it's just for reassurance Flowers hope he feels better soon

CraftyGin · 26/10/2021 18:19

Those symptoms could be an ear infection.

Crazycakelady17 · 26/10/2021 18:36

With the lack of wet nappies and now the start of diarrhoea I would want him checked maybe now A and E but out of hours would see him call now they usually start from 6pm
The lack of eating wouldn’t bother me but try encourage small sips even if you have to give him squash

Opal8 · 26/10/2021 19:05

If he's not drinking is it his mouth?
HF & M?
Or tonsils?

Sirzy · 26/10/2021 19:07

Have you tried syringing fluids into him?

But if in doubt get him checked

girlmom21 · 26/10/2021 22:00

Hope he's ok op x

MynameisJune · 26/10/2021 22:04

I’d call 111 for an out of hours GP appointment than go to A&E. But always get them seen, a doctor once told me ‘if you’re worried, then we are worried’

3luckystars · 26/10/2021 22:07

Absolutely go back if he has deteriorated.
You can use nurofen or paralink suppositories if he won’t take the medicine by mouth. use a syringe to get fluids into him, keep track of every ml he is getting.
Keep track of the medicine he has had also. Good luck.

I would go. I only avoided dehydration when DS had an ear infection at around the same age because I was still combi-feeding and he took a bit of breastmilk. Everything else hurt his ear too much (syringe, cup, spoon). As it turns out viruses affect his oxygen levels (viral wheeze) which I wouldn't have realised without going to Urgent Care the following time he had an ear infection.
