To be annoyed with neighbours doing noisy DIY at 10pm

Mid terrace but the other neighbours have hallways between them .

This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. They are clearly doing the work after work and start at about. 6-7 pm and are still going .

I have kept quiet as they will clearly hear noise from us at some point and live and let live and all that ….but it is stressing me out now .
They put a card through the door when they moved in to introduce themselves but no warning re the noise .

AIBU to complain to them ?

I wouldn't make an immediate 'complaint' as such. Do you ever speak to them? Could you ask how long their DIY is going on for because its really disruptive? If you don't speak or they are never in, I'd put a note through their door and ask- Hi neighbour ......'

If there is no response, keep a noise diary. Date, time noises started/ended, nature of noise etc. I had to do this when living in a flat, despite speaking to the neighbour multiple times! The council claimed they could come in to my place with noise measuring equipment.

Its stressing you out enough to post on here, so you need to speak to them!

I have never spoken to them just as our paths have never crossed .
I put a card through their door when they moved in saying welcome etc .
I think I will leave it until next week and see what happens. .
I just can’t believe anyone would think it is acceptable to do this for weeks on end

Is it renovations they are doing, banging walls, drilling or something else? Can you tell?

Check your council website, because they normally have guidance of what time its considered 'ok' to make such noise in a residential area.

Another thought is that they are doing work without planning permission. Might be a long shot, but really depends what they are doing?

I looked on the council website and it says Building works should be until 6pm

Lots of banging and scraping noises . Think they plastering now so sweeping scraping noises .

Victorian terrace which is not sound proof at all.

I'd start a noise diary anyways and call the council tomorrow for advice.

I'd be banging loudly on the wall by now but I'm not saying that's the right approach at all! Absolutely disgraceful to be doing building works at this time. Definitely call Environmental Health at the Council tomorrow. They'll initially send them a letter, informing them that they're out of line. They'll ask you to keep a diary and if it continues, they'll put recording equipment in your home. If they still persist, then they'll be prosecuted and may even be given an ASBO!

Go around tomorrow and be really nice. Ask how long their renovations will be going on because it's really noisy in the evenings. Try and solve it with them on good terms before you go to council or anything like that.

Thanks for the advice I feel more rational at this time of day .
I usually go to bed at 9pm and am asleep by 10ish which I know is early .
If I had a baby or young children it would be a disaster .
I will give it until next week and if it continues I will go and speak to them .
