Just so sick that we are not shifting away from plastic harder or faster...

@blacksax

We get through a lot of Piriton in this house - 3 family members with allergies - and years ago they used to sell it in little glass pots with 100 (I think) in them. I used to get them on prescription. When they introduced blister packs the price per tablet shot through the roof, and the quantity reduced drastically. Even buying the generic chemist own brand ones the price is ridiculous.

Not to mention the sheer waste of all that plastic.

Home Bargains do parks of 30 own brand for £1. Adds up but better than most.
mumda · 26/10/2021 21:25

Blister packing can be recycled at superdrug.

DecadentlyDecisive · 26/10/2021 22:08

I like to know the drugs I dig out of the bottom of a bag, glove compartment or pocket are still useable. Plastic & foil lasts long after the cardboard box has been smashed to bits.

I just chuck the old wrappers in the recycling along with every other bit of plastic....

sashh · 27/10/2021 04:21

@Bearnecessity

Blister packs are high on my radar at the mo cos I have a god awful cold and I am getting through them like nobody's business.....

Fruit and veg packaging would be next on my agenda...

Along with the rest of it obviously...

You must hate me then, I take about 10 different pills a day.

Not only that, but, prepared to be shocked, they are packaged in a dosette box at the pharmacy.

So most of my pills (there are a couple they can't do this with) are taken out of one single use plastic and put into another single use plastic but hey I'm only one of millions of disabled people on this planet.

Bearnecessity · 27/10/2021 08:44

I don't hate anyone @sashh certainly not millions of disabled people in need of medication....

The drugs manufacturing process (and most manufacturing processes) create colossal plastic waste. The packaging is a drop in the ocean.

Lockdownbear · 27/10/2021 09:28

Does it actually reduce suicide overall though, or do people who previously would have killed themselves with paracetamol now jump off bridges or gas themselves in cars instead?

I say yes. Anything that slows the process, provides thinking time.
If someone would previously grabbed a bottle of paracetamol they'd have very little thinking / calming time than it takes to get to the cupboard in the kitchen.

If someone wants to gas themselves or jump from a bridge that takes planning, ensuring car has fuel, choosing bridge, getting there, or getting hose pipe out and even while the car is filling with smoke it's still time for someone to open the car door and get out.
Also men are more likely to choose violent forms of suicide than women are.

Re the fruit and veg. The co op now have collection boxes in many stores so you can drop in soft plastics to recycle. Anything from crisp packets, yogurt pot lids, pet food pouches to veg bags.

There’s a link to locate your nearest store collecting here

It is, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
Bearnecessity · 27/10/2021 13:02

Thank you HazelandChacha I did not know about the Co-op.

HalzTangz · 27/10/2021 13:05

Many shops already sell them in cardboard packaging, I can't remember the last time I bought any in aplastic bottle

Bearnecessity · 27/10/2021 15:16

It is the plastic blister tray inside that we are discussing @HalzTangz.

Blister packaging of paracetamol reduced suicide deaths. I imagine there's also a benefit to them being sold in something light and waterproof.
I wonder if it reduced the overall cases of suicide, or just those by paracetamol.

I think I'd rather people kill themselves using paracetamol rather than throwing themselves in front of trains, for example.

I think there should be a rethink on packaging generally as a PP said. I was wondering today why we need ice lollies wrapped in plastic, I am sure it used to be paper covering.

But you can take the blister packs to Boots and Superdrug to recycle.

HazelandChacha · 27/10/2021 18:51

I just went to look on Boots website @ColinTheKoala because our nearest Superdrug doesn’t take the blister packs & we’d have to go the next town over. Boots say they don’t take blister packs ?

Do you have other info?
There is a big boots near us so it would be great if they do it, I know they recycle contact lenses, the foils and plastic contact lens packets in boots opticians which is great.

TirednWorried · 27/10/2021 21:51

I know someone whose team work for a food distributor.Their job it is to unpack frozen food sent out from the factory wrapped in lots of say 24 in plastic, and repack them in cardboard boxes of 24 before being sent out to supermarkets, so it ' to the customers that not so much plastic is being used i

Blister packaging of paracetamol reduced suicide deaths

Every time I read that information it gets reinforced inside my head:

taking paracetamol is a way to commit suicide.
Just in case you didn't know -
taking paracetamol is a way to commit suicide.

I mean, drinking bleach or shampoo or 6 gallons of water could achieve the same outcome just as easily, but no one say that. They just keep advertising that
taking paracetamol is a way to commit suicide.

To me it feels like ppl want everyone to know this fact.
How about a much better fact. Like..

taking paracetamol is a TERRIBLE way to commit suicide.

because it is. Slow, painful, if you fail to kill self you could be very damaged.

There is a very important message that could be said to try to reduce suicide by paracetamol. Which is

taking paracetamol is a TERRIBLE way to commit suicide.

But no. Don't get that message. All we get is the baffling drip drip drip of...
taking paracetamol is a way to commit suicide.

XenoBitch · 27/10/2021 22:36

@lljkk

Absolutely!
I have known of people who are facing needing liver transplants after a paracetamol OD.
It is not a pretty way to check out.. it is painful and violent.

Bearnecessity · 27/10/2021 23:45

🤦‍♀️*@TirednWorried* I am not surprised by your revelation. I should be but I am not.
