We are currently looking for a cockapoo puppy and have been to 2 houses where the puppies and owners seem nice enough however the smell of them is almost unbearable. It’s a mixture of wee and pop which I assume is normal but I want to know if should I expect from a decent seller to present the puppies not literally sticking of poo and wee.
I can understand it’s difficult when there Are 6-7 of together but feel if it was me trying to sell animals I would make sure when people come around they don’t feel they can’t cuddle them as they smell so bad??

Do not buy a puppy from breeders like this.

Hmmmm, slightly YABU - if they're still being toilet trained then the room will smell! However if you're talking about huge piles of day old poo etc that's a different conversation. They're not going to spritz each puppy with air freshener to appeal to purchasers 😂 if there's 7 puppies, they could have cleaned half an hour before you appeared and multiple poos and wees can be done in 30 minutes.

If you can't handle the smell of the wee / poo, prepare yourself for worse smells when you have them in your own home 😬 (they don't toilet train immediately, can regress when stressed in new environments and can get ill!).

Dogs smell, especially young ones that aren't trained yet. Honestly, you'll be picking up their poo for the next decade, are you honestly sure this is right for you?

Peace43 · 25/10/2021 16:40

Dogs are stinky things. They take a while to house train. They are always muddy. They roll in yucky stuff (fox poo is awful, sheep is no problem at all, mine once rolled in diarrhoea!). They vomit on your carpet and make muddy nests on your bed. They chew your stuff, dig up your flowers and piss on your mother’s favourite piece of oak furniture (albeit only once!)

Dogs smell bad. Don’t get a dog if bad smells offend. However the puppies shouldn’t be caked in yuck. They are normally a little whiffy though as you can’t really bath them at that age and they per on each other a lot!!

I've got to say this is the huge advantage of having a bald dog.
Dogs with hair can get pretty smelly.

Amkotbj · 25/10/2021 16:57

This is actually very helpful, thank you. There have been no visible poo or wee anywhere but the smell was very strong. I have to admit, I’m sensitive to smell.
Have no real experience in looking for a puppy and so not really sure what to look for…

Go to a shelter and find a dog that needs a home.

Fuck breeders.

finopitta · 25/10/2021 17:04

It could also be the stuff they're cleaning with or using to train. There's a spray you can get that you spray on the puppy pads to make them see there that smells like wee.

But as PP said if your nose is easily offended don't get a dog!

Amkotbj · 25/10/2021 17:32

I have 4 boys so would say I’m generally ok with unpleasant smells Grin
Also no shelter would let us adopt a dog as youngest is 3 years old
