To get sterilised due to side effects of contraception

Olivegreenstrawberries · 25/10/2021 12:43

I've had 2 c sections, I'm mid thirties. I'd like to get sterilised as sick of all the side effects of contraception. Currently on depo which makes me dead from the waist down.

What sort of sterilisation did you have if you had a c section or 2? Did you have a laparoscopy or a mini one? Were you under local or general?

Thank you

Hi I have had 2 c sections and was sterilised via a laparoscopy. My DH has medical issues so it had to be me.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 25/10/2021 13:08

Sorry, so I had a general.

Olivegreenstrawberries · 28/10/2021 20:12

Thank you. I would prefer a general. As I hated both c sections : emergency and elective because even though it ways painful, all the rummaging around made me feel disgusting. I felt like my insides were being pulled out and jungled with.

Have you considered the non hormonal coil?

Mrsjayy · 28/10/2021 20:16

I had a laparoscopy under GA best decision I've ever made I had mine younger than you I have medical issues and was definitely done with pregnancy .my obstetrician was really supportive and agreed . I had it ,,6 months after dc2 .

Mrsjayy · 28/10/2021 20:19

Sorry that was a bit ",mememe" Blush yanbu to want it done.

Not at all. It's really good to hear how it went for you. I'd like GA.

I'm stalling talking to my GP about it as I know the surgery is under strain and I've had some recent apps about unrelated stuff so I feel like I need to wait my turn on something...I know that makes no sense!!

YANBU to want it, but be prepared to have to fight for it. I was refused at 35 (two DC, adamant I don't want anymore, tried almost everything) as 'you or your husband may want more in future' and 'sorry, our Health Authority don't fund female sterilisation'.

DP had a vasectomy instead. 12 weeks from consultation and referral to procedure. Maybe something to consider instead.

I have...but the thought of any sort of coil makes me feel sick.

Olivegreenstrawberries · 28/10/2021 20:29

@unanananana what?! don't fund it...that's awful.

My husband has already looked into it. It's not really a viable option for him.

There is no harm in asking for a referral to gynae. Deep breaths and an assertive I want sterrilised will get the ball rolling., Although I you might have a wait but it's worth it. Have you tried the implant in the meantime. I hated Depo it was horrendous

CantChatNow · 28/10/2021 20:33

Does sterilisation stop periods? I’d do pretty much anything to stop having periods!

Kylereese · 28/10/2021 20:34

I got sterilised at 32 after my second child. I didn’t have sections though, I just went to the GP.

I didn’t “ask” I just went in and said I’m here to be referred for sterilisation please refer me to the list and they did.

I went under general and had keyhole don’t know what sort!!

No it doesn't

I'll have to get used to having periods again..I have none on the depo and no PMT

Did you have the implant? If so was it different to being on depo?

Because I was told I'd likely react to it the same way

@Kylereese thanks.

So from these replies it seems like GA is the norm.

I was sterilised at the same time as my second c section. While I was already cut open it seemed to make sense 🤣

ChetChet · 28/10/2021 20:43

I've had keyhole surgery and fulshie clips under GA. Back home in the evening and moving about slowly the next day. I was 34.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/10/2021 22:40

The depo has a lot more progesterone than the implant or the progesterone only pill so either of those should have less side effects.the coil or the mirena work as well as sterilisation with less risk and less cost to the nhs. Talk to your GP again re your options.

Mrsjayy · 29/10/2021 10:54

Sorry no I didn't have the implant but I have heard the side effects arevnot as severe as Depo,

Cheerbear23 · 29/10/2021 11:04

I know what you mean about being dead from the waist down with deposit, so YANBU.
My GP wouldn’t see me to give it in lockdown and I’m off it now, can’t believe the difference.
