Fucking rats! Again!!

I fucking hate our neighbours. Yet again we have rats in our house. We had them this time last year, then we got rid and then they came back around Christmas. Now because they've got crap in the garden and keep feeding the foxes/birds they're bloody back!

We have cameras in the basement and it's just bloody picked up a massive one. Sent the dog down to see what he'd do and he's killed it. He's 13! Now we have to get the pest people back but I might get a knew company out because the other one didn't fill in the holes he found just baited them.

I've ordered some wire wool (cheers Amazon) and moved the camera to see which hole it's using. I'm 99% sure it's just come in now the camera has only picked it up tonight Sad

If I report to environmental health will they tell my neighbours to fucking stop?

New not knew I'm stressed

I thought this thread was going to be about rats reproducing 🤣

I don’t think environmental health will stop your neighbours feeding wildlife though, that’s not really a health hazard so probably isn’t in their remit. If you’ve identified several holes why not just fill all of them in yourself with filler?

GobletofFiyah · 25/10/2021 02:59

They're bloody huge holes, I'm going to ram some steel wool in the holes and nail some wood across the top until we can afford to replanted the whole room

Replaster

I’d be furious too yanbu. Send them the bill.

GirlWithAGuitar · 25/10/2021 03:07

Stop what? Feeding birds and foxes? No one would stop me doing that.

But what do you mean by they’ve got crap in the garden?

IndecentCakes · 25/10/2021 03:09

I think if you have a basement with many rodent sized entry points, you all need to sort it out first. Keep updating on the rats, though. It's thrilling in a creepy kind of way.

TuftyMarmoset · 25/10/2021 03:09

If the holes are that big I don’t think you can really blame it on your neighbours if stuff comes in!

GobletofFiyah · 25/10/2021 03:16

The shit in the garden is an old washing machine. Their sofa that they didn't want to take to the tip, they just tip the food out of the window into the garden so it sits there and rots.

Sorry I can't be of much help, but just to say I'd be furious, too.
And I can commiserate in a way -- we used to have a horrid neighbour who dumped bags full of cans and bottles into the creek next to us. We had to call the council at least once a month. It continued for years.
It has recently finally stopped; I hope think he died.

Filthy, nasty git. 💩

Essexmum321 · 25/10/2021 04:52

If you / your neighbours have any fruit or nut trees that will attract them

MamsellMarie · 25/10/2021 05:06

If it's on going I'd prob get a cat

InTheNightWeWillWish · 25/10/2021 05:34

You have my sympathies. We have the same situation with our neighbour and mice. Granted we live near a river and back onto a field, so mice are always going to find our house. However, the neighbours have loads of crap in their garden and they don’t give a shit. We’ve had pest control out every year for the last 3 years. Every year they assess our house and border up any new holes and re-bait the traps. It’s a semi detached house and the neighbours are too cheap to get anyone out but they’re all coming in from their house. When I told them we had a problem last year, she said it didn’t bother her Angry Saturday we had a trap go off for the first time and caught another on Sunday, so we’re monitoring it but it looks like another £300 to get the pest control guys out.

GirlWithAGuitar · 25/10/2021 05:34

I would report the mess in the garden, sofas and rotting food waste will obviously be what’s attracting the rats so they should order the neighbours to clear it up and stop doing it.

Have you asked the neighbours to move it? Completely understand if you haven’t, people that do that aren’t going to be the most pleasant people probably.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 25/10/2021 05:42

Report the build up of rubbish and associated rats/mice via your council.
I'd also use the council pest control as they'll be cheaper. We have them coming out today (no idea how good they'll be though). Ours is £115 for 3 visits.

Harlequin1088 · 25/10/2021 05:49

Oh wow I could've written this post, OP. Neighbours have got literal trash in their garden, rats got into their house then into ours through a tiny hole in an adjoining wall we didn't know about. It's taken weeks as there were so many of them that the pest man had to keep coming out to put more bait down but the rats are now dead and the hole is filled. Pest man went round to tell the neighbours that the rats were coming from their house and garden. Was simply greeted with a round of fucks 🙄

isthismylifenow · 25/10/2021 06:02

For now, put some mothballs near any holes and gaps that they can get though. They are probably looking for somewhere warm to nest. Don't make it too pleasant for them.

I know every thing else will smell of mothballs but rats don't like them either.

Mothballs have been illegal in the Uk for many years- cant buy them anymore

The rats make the holes through chewing. They can squeeze through a tiny gap.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 25/10/2021 07:57

My tiny cat keeps bringing big old rats in and letting them go in the house, it's driving me nuts. I've caught her at it.

Extraonions · 25/10/2021 08:08

We are in a similar predicament … we have a private pest control contractor who’s keeping them in check - we can’t workout where they are coming from. We are in the middle of a terrace, our neighbours are tidy people, we had a drain survey, but, they are under the floorboards and in the attic (I don’t hear them, our contractor tells us this)
We now have the council involved - they have a legal obligation to investigate and to take action … it’s their statutory duty . Get in touch with the council (you are not asking them to bait… for which there will be a charge)

PaulGallico · 25/10/2021 08:17

Feeding fox's and birds with food on the ground will attract rats.

I did not know this.

I chuck one into the back of my wardrobe when I do the winter clothes swap over, luckily the clothes don't absorb the smell as I put them into those vaccum bags. But I do live in a country with lots of bugs, so I think they will be here to stay. Mostly used to get rid of rodents though.

IAAP · 25/10/2021 09:34

I was plagued with rats in my last house. Huge holes under the concrete plinths for the fence. Eat runs everywhere. it was their bird feeder. It was dire. Horrible. Cost me £300 to get rid of them they caught 26 of the sods and I’m not kidding they were ducking huge buggers. I tried everything I could first filling the hole up with wire wool etc poison etc get council involved and spend the money now to get pest control in and then pay them to maintain it.
