Moving our of parents home. Homesick!

Been living with my dad (in my own connected flat) and my grandad next door for past 4 years. Just moved into my first house on my own and haven’t stopped crying! Miss them so much. To the point I’m considering selling my house and moving back home!

Anyone else felt like this? Will it pass?

OP I expect it’s harder because you’re still living nearby (as @dottiedodah said it can be a bit claustrophobic) and so there hasn’t been the huge change that many of us have when we move away from family.

I went to uni 4 hours drive from my parents’ house and then lived and worked abroad in my 20s and so just had to get in with it. In some ways that made it a lot easier to cope with.

As others have suggested, give yourself time to get used to the changes. Your feelings are perfectly normal and to be expected.

If you need a dad/grandad fix why don’t you invite them to your house for a meal or to watch a favourite tv programme rather than return to theirs? That way you’d be building family memories in your home too.

@dottiedodah
That’s exactly how I felt. A bit smothered like I couldn’t live my life without questions. I know they meant it in a caring way. But it was tough and eventually I just stopped going out or having friends over.

I’m hoping this feeling will pass!

@thevassal
I have been visiting every evening too. Which I don’t think is helping. But I want to gradually ease myself away. More for their sake I think.
It would be nice to eventually be able to pop in on my way home from work every day without feeling like this after. That way it would still feel like the same, just sleeping in a different house.

I feel so stupid that I feel like this! I’m glad it’s normal.
