New starters being offered a higher salary

Halloaten · 23/10/2021 23:09

I started a new job a month ago. The job advert had no salary details and I was asked at interview what I was currently earning and I was started at the same with the promise that it would increase rapidly as I gained more responsibility.
I was happy with this.
Fast forward a month. I have done nothing yet. Beyond anything I have insisted on myself, basically admin/ receptionist duties (not the job advertised). In addition to this I have kept records of every query and answer, I have made master spreadsheets on daily info which comes in (this sort of thing was my job in my old role, Common sense if you will, who has ordered what that day, just saves searching 34575 documents when customers inevitably query shite
Basically, I have done over and above what has been expected so far and feel these documents would only be beneficial to the company and have no issues sharing them should other members of my team be aware of them
However, I have not been shown anything about the job I have been hired to do.. so i am behind in my earning power in my opinion.
Additionally, the job I applied for was for 2 roles, the other has never been filled, however the advert has been changed to include salary which is significantly more than I was started on. There is also a final salary on there for when the person is competent at the role. The fact I have not been shown anything regarding the job is prolonging the point at which I am eligible to ask for this end salary. It is pissing me right off. I want to ask my manager in for a word on Monday but what do I say? I want the higher advertised salary now and want a date/ plan for the end salary. It is not my fault I have been stopped from doing the work required to earn it is it? But I have no balls Blush

Sorry op here, I have done the thing I hate in my post by not giving figures.

The job I accepted a month ago is now being advertised at 125% of the salary I am on. With the end point being double my current salary. I seem to be sitting in a waiting room for it though

Apply for the other job?

LittleOwl153 · 23/10/2021 23:27

You have to ask. Otherwise if they do fill the post you will be left seething and probably resent both the newcomer and the management.

If ask you manager about the advertised salary. I'd be clear in asking for the 25% increase now. Equal work for equal pay etc.

Then I'd give it a couple of weeks, and ask for a meeting. Ask for your training plan to be outlined and through that where the increments to the full wage fit in.

Halloaten · 23/10/2021 23:57

Thank you, training plan/ wage increments is a fab idea. I don't want to tackle one issue to only find another immediately! I want to ask for the top wage advertised as u have the potential for experience but it is them holding me back

OP posts:
Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 24/10/2021 00:36

Are they waiting for you both to be in post to them train you together?

Pythonista · 24/10/2021 00:39

Just be aware that you haven't been there two years so if you do speak out, don't be surprised if they don't keep you on after probation period

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/10/2021 01:39

I want to ask for the top wage advertised as u have the potential for experience but it is them holding me back

Seriously? To use a good MN phrase, are you on glue? You expect them to double your salary after a month. And you inconsistently say:

"I have done nothing yet"

But also:

"I have done over and above what has been expected"

You don't sound very savvy about work. You didn't negotiate a pay rise when you joined. You've only been there a month and seem to have done just basic admin but now you want them to double your salary because you "have potential" and "it is them holding me back". Do you appreciate how batshit this sounds?

Perhaps the reason they've upped the salary in the other role is because they've decided they want someone with experience (rather than potential). Perhaps they don't have time to train you and they're expecting the new more experienced person to do that.

Cocomarine · 24/10/2021 01:42

So they advertised 2 roles, without a salary.
You applied for one, and accepted their salary offer.
They still need to fill the other role.
They’re advertising the other role at a higher salary.
But that is not the job that you are doing.
Perhaps they don’t want to attract a candidate with “potential” but one with proven experience?
Your title made it sound like someone new had actually been recruited to do the same job as you for more money.

If you came to me complaining about a salary for a different job, I wouldn’t be impressed. If you came to me to discuss progression (experience and salary) in your own job, I’d listen.

Cocomarine · 24/10/2021 01:49

Crossed posts there with @HundredMilesAnHour on potential vs experience!

You can’t just ask them for a date for the future higher salary! It’s not the Civil Service in the 70s where you just sit and wait for your increment. It’s seems an odd set up though - you don’t sound like you’re doing the kind of thing where salaries can double with experience. That tends to be the case more with things where there are professional qualifications to trigger increments - like accountancy. Or sales? But that’s usually OTE not salary.

immersivereader · 24/10/2021 01:53

They've figured you're good at admin so they'll keep you there?

Also:

I was asked at interview what I was currently earning and I was started at the same with the promise that it would increase rapidly as I gained more responsibility.

^^

If it isn't written down they've no obligation.

Also, i hope you were economical with the truth in regards to past salary

Halloaten · 24/10/2021 23:39

I was 'headhunted' by a supplier whilst I was the office manager of a customer. My old boss and new one are friends so i would have been caught out had I lied about salary. No hard feelings at all, there was just nowhere to progress in my old place. I have been given nothing to do for the last month, nothing at all from anybody. I have busied myself with the filing and printing and any queries that have come in, I have looked them up on the system whilst everyone else is looking into them and thought about easier ways of finding the answers than are currently the norm. Hence my spreadsheets etc that are not in use currently but saved to my desktop.
I have been told to write my shopping list or do my nails or look for holidays whilst I'm bored. They are making zero efforts to train me up but I have done lots of webinars on their system and more to come this week. This has been prompted by me, not them. I think as pp said that they are waiting for #2 to start and train us together but this was not discussed with me and is only delaying my opportunity to earn a higher salary as it is not looking as though anybody will start until the new year now given annual leave being taken.
I am not going to ask for the top end salary, I just want the top of that being advertised to the new starter as a starting salary. Top salary is forever delayed as I don't know when training will begin

I don’t understand why you think they’ll double your salary after a month, when you’ve effectively not been doing anything?

Hunderland · 25/10/2021 00:10

I assume the other role is more technical / specialist / requires more experience hence the higher salary?

Expecting a pay rise after one month is... optimistic. And you do know that if the new shiny filing systems are on your desktop they can still see them?

GellerYeller · 25/10/2021 00:16

There's a huge shortage of applicants in all sectors at the moment. It could be that they've had to up the salary to attract anyone at all. It doesn't mean they will necessarily pay it however. If you don't add a salary some job boards add one automatically based on an average for similar jobs. Indeed, for example. And they can be very far from the actual rate IME.

maddening · 25/10/2021 00:21

Apply for the other role

Halloaten · 25/10/2021 00:21

The other role is exactly the same as mine. I am not wanting to double my salary after a month, I only wish to have what they are now advertising my exact role as

OP posts:
ThelmaMadine · 25/10/2021 00:22

I’m confused.

You say you were headhunted, but then mention seeing the advert for the role, and applying for the job.

Also, why aren’t you sharing the master spreadsheet you’ve created if it’s that good? Surely letting it just sit on your desktop means it’s going out of sate?

Maybe if you were proactive and showed them the spreadsheet, they would see your capabilities?

Hunderland · 25/10/2021 00:32

If the other role is exactly the same then definitely apply!

Cocomarine · 25/10/2021 00:41

It all seems very odd. Why would they say the salary will be double when you’re “competent”? That makes no sense at all for an office manager type role.

Halloaten · 25/10/2021 00:41

They had been advertising for some time and their sales rep pointed it out to me. He put a word in and I was contacted by his senior, interviewed etc by the same guy but he didn't work in this office.
I thought this was head hunted but maybe I am wrong

OP posts:
LittleOwl153 · 27/10/2021 15:42

I'd probably be on the look out for another job in your shoes. If you've nothing to do in month then do they really need you let alone 2 of you? I'd definitely be asking what the plan is as wages aside I would be feeling very insecure rightnow.
