To not understand why they won't reveal the location of this exhibition but are selling tickets??

titanicexhibitionlondon.com

Seen this advertised widely on social media, looks good, am tempted, tickets are now on sale

BUT under "location" they state "an exhibition space in the heart of London to be revealed". Surely they must have a venue secured for such a big event if they're selling tickets so why the secrecy?? Lots of people have commented exactly that on their Facebook page to which they keep replying the venue will be revealed nearer the time. I certainly won't be booking tickets until I know the venue and would presume most people would do the same, although a fair number of people have commented they have already booked.

AIBU to think this is either a scam or there's a big catch?!?!

I have come across this a couple of times recently. I think they are trying to be exciting. It really puts me off. I live in the far SW of London and the venue really makes a difference as to whether or not it's worth going or not. "Central" can actually mean quite far East for me, some parts of which are a faff to get to. I never book without venue details.

Geminijust · 23/10/2021 15:40

That was my thoughts exactly, London is a big place "in the heart of London" could mean anything. I'd be worried it was in a place not easy to get to on public transport.

There's an event that keeps getting advertised near me (North East) that gets 'cancelled due to unforseen circumstances' and rescheduled if they haven't sold enough tickets. I only know this because I was going to book tickets but noticed the cancellation clause hidden in the FAQ. Maybe they haven't booked anywhere yet until they sell more tickets?
I think its a bit shady personally.

Shoxfordian · 23/10/2021 16:27

Wouldn’t really bother me, everywhere in London is accessible on public transport

Queenoftheashes · 23/10/2021 16:56

Ugh I went to secret cinema in a secret London location once. Fucking Dagenham!! 8 of ten people dropped out and I went out of guilt.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/10/2021 17:04

Probably means that if they sell pre-event tickets, they'll rent somewhere decent, if they sell bugger all it'll be a broom cupboard in Dagenham.
Queenoftheashes will be delighted.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 23/10/2021 17:12

DP & I went to a Titanic exhibition years ago. When you went in you were given a card with a name on it, at the end you could look up the name on a large board to see if you survived or not.

DP didn't but I did, spookily the person shared a surname with my boss at the time (no relation)

flowersmakeitbetter · 23/10/2021 17:14

Yes!

I saw this yesterday for a 'secret feast' event locally. Gave the name of the town but not location.

All sounded a bit poncetastic.....

In theory, but some journeys are much more of a faff than others, depending on the start and end points. I also like to check for scheduled engineering works before booking because that can make a big difference to the journey.
EscapeTheCastle · 23/10/2021 17:19

Super shady. I'm guessing they haven't gathered the artefacts from the sea bed yet.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 23/10/2021 17:29

@MrsScrubbingbrush There’s a museum like that in Belgium. You can scan your card on the way round to follow your “journey”, and then you find out if you survived the war. I’m 31 now and did it on a school trip at 13, so it seems to have left an impression!

Spooky that your person shared your bosses name 🙈

This

And however many they sell, I'd say it has a more than average chance of ending up like those "Winter Wonderland" things that turn out to be a few strings of lights, a wrecked shed and a few pissed elves

Sparklesocks · 23/10/2021 17:58

I understand your caution, some people/event companies seem to have very vague notions of what constitutes as central and it might be a bit of a pain if it’s say quite west or quite north. And larger exhibition venues/spaces can often be on the outskirts due to their size.

I remember a colleague once telling me that her family from overseas had travelled to London to stay with her. They were quite shocked that the Harry Potter studios tour which had been marketed as in ‘London’ was actually more like 20 miles out of central and in Watford.

DGRossetti · 23/10/2021 18:00

Good way to keep the less able out though. Genius. I bet there were a few bonuses for that wheeze.

Oh yes, I've often read on the Tripadvisor forums people from the US or wherever thinking they'll do HP in the morning and Tower of London etc in the afternoon as they're all in London. This is what I'm worried about!

My daughter would really enjoy this but I wouldn’t book without knowing the location. It’s just a pain really. They must have an idea of numbers/booking so the whole secret squirrel thing isn’t exciting, it’s just irritating.

jerometheturnipking · 23/10/2021 19:05

Oh I hate this. When I was a student there was this ultra wanky, invitation only, 'secret location' nightclub opening. Buses put on from near the student union by the event organisers to get you to and from etc. It was an empty fucking barn on a farm just outside the town. AND you had to take your own drink because they "didn't have their licence yet". It was an utter farce, and was never heard of again after the 'opening night', shockingly enough.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/10/2021 19:29

Sounds like the organisers haven't moved on from the 80s and early 90s thing of driving round on a Saturday evening before phoning from a service station on the M25 for an answerphone message giving the location of the next rave.

I'd assume anything like this is inherently inaccessible for anybody with mobility difficulties (and no, not all of London is accessible by public transport, never mind the venues themselves being suitable), is likely to be cancelled without warning and for the site to disappear from the internet when you go to find out the location/request a refund.

Mayvis · 23/10/2021 19:37

I saw the same advert earlier and was interested but the lack of location put me off (I’m in Essex so it could be quite a trek). Plus the family price of over £70!

Also seen a Christmas event marketed in Cambridge but ‘location soon to be revealed’. Why? There are already Christmas events happening in the city so they must know where their event is taking place.

fiftiesmum · 23/10/2021 19:44

One recently was Tottenham Hale (and not even near the station)
