Losing weight in pregnancy

I've probably lost about a stone. I'm 12 weeks.

Has this happened to anyone and the baby has been OK?

I have HG, so I just don't eat much, as it makes me vomit. Still taking folic acid etc at night when I feel a bit better.

I was by NO means underweight before, in fact, slightly overweight because I gained during lock downs. So there are plenty of reserves if that makes sense.

I feel like I'll probably continue losing, as I just can't eat much.

Has this happened to anyone and they've been ok? And baby OK?

I will of course discuss with midwife too.

I lost a stone over the first 3 months too, despite not being at all overweight, due to morning sickness (although it was mild, just couldn't eat like before). Remember that if you were drinking alcohol before, giving it up makes a big difference to weight loss! Over the second and third trimesters I gained the weight back, plus a small amount more. You and baby will be fine.

LaMadrilena · 23/10/2021 16:55

Correction, it was 3kg I lost so more like half a stone, sorry.

Ah ok. No I really didn't drink alcohol before. Maybe twice in 2021, before I got pregnant. Just went right off it, due to severe hangovers !

@nettytree

I think also people tend to eat healthier when pregnant, so that maybe why you have lost weight.
I kind of just eat what I feel like at the moment. So I don't think I'm eating healthier. I just can't eat anywhere near as much. I don't have breakfast and tend to eat once a day at lunch. No dinner as the evening is the only time I get a bit of relief, so if I eat dinner I feel dreadful.

I was in the obese bmi range when I was pregnant with ds, I had severe hg from 8 weeks pregnant through until I was about 26 weeks I think.
All the different types of anti sickness medication I tried did nothing for me. I lost 4 stone during that time as I just could not eat- my ds was absolutely fine, and unfortunately I put all the weight back on and more after giving birth whilst breast feeding! (I’ve lost it all again now through hard work!)
It’s worth mentioning it to your midwife/gp to see if you can try some anti sickness medication if your struggling but essentially I was told not to worry as long as you can get liquid down and not get dehydrated, and eat what you can when you can- even if it’s not particularly good/healthy choices!
Always worth reaching out to someone for help/reassurance though!

I was less than 8 stone when I was about 16 weeks pregnant. Baby was fine. My sister suffered from severe HG. She weighed about 6 and a half stone at her lowest. Baby and mum were fine.

Ginger is good for pregnancy sickness. You can get drops to add to water to drink before eating. Or just a dry ginger biscuit.
Hope you’re ok . It’s horrible so you have my sympathy.

My HG was so severe I was histories for the first trimester. I lost 20kgs in my pregnancy. I have a beautifully happy healthy baby.

professionalnomad · 23/10/2021 17:42

Histories? Hospitalised!

I lost half a stone in the first trimester, and I didn't even have bad morning sickness (only actually sick a handful of times). I then put on a stone before DD arrived 6 weeks early.
No problems whatsoever at any point. I had been a bit overweight, so I think I just slimmed down to what I should have been.

Badabingbadabum · 23/10/2021 18:57

I did with both dds. Severe migraines made my eating sporadic (and I ate mostly junk when I was hungry!) but had two perfectly fine babies, dd1 was 8lb, dd2 just under that so no problems with them growing. I gained the weight back and then some after dd1 as breastfeeding made me so hungry Blush

My midwife said that the baby will take whatever it needs from you, so if u have ‘reserves’ and are taking a pregnancy supplement with all the essentials plus enough calcium, it should be ok?
Ps make sure you take enough calcium as I’ve heard some awful stories about tooth loss and bone density loss etc

Rtmhwales · 23/10/2021 19:01

With DS and HG I went from a measly 7.5 stone before pregnancy to 6 stone at 12 weeks. I just couldn't keep anything down so was on IV nutrition. I eventually gained the weight back later in pregnancy but was still only 8 stone at the delivery, which was premature. He was a healthy weight with zero complications though. The doctors said the baby would just suck the nutrients out of my body that they needed and it appears to be the case.

Sorry you're suffering through this!

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 23/10/2021 19:05

Junkies drink milk drinks as they are the easiest to keep down so milk based smoothies sound like a good idea. Lots of people lose weight in pregnancy the babies are fine but it can make it a rough ride for the mums.

I lost half a stone in the first trimester without ever having any sickness and my child came out smallish but has since made up for that!
No issues really.
