Positive thread about life in England

My family is about to relocate back to the UK after over a decade on the continent. It’s for work reasons, and to be closer to family. In a lovely part of the UK. I’m fluctuating between excited and despairing - the situation seems so bad over there at the moment from what I see in the news (I.e on MN Smile). Brexit, Covid cases, NHS crisis. Some days I wonder what the hell we’re thinking and others I can’t wait to come back for gorgeous British walks and pub lunches. Can you share what you find positive about life in the UK right now?
@MarshaBradyo where would you go?
It’s easy for me I have two passports

Staying here is always a choice. Maybe it helps me feel more positive than some (well those who feel unhappy, many enjoy it as I do).

CallMeAChopper · 22/10/2021 21:11
@MarshaBradyo yes. I like the wildlife. And I’m in Scotland so we have a more socialist approach to life.

But I do think it’s funny when people rhapsodise about being welcoming as if we didn’t just shoot ourselves in the foot because of ‘immigrants’ and vague ideas of sovereignty, and that we think it’s great that you can have a lovely day out so long as you own a four-bed house and poverty never has to cross your mind. Britain is on its knees and a huge number of people couldn’t give a shit because it doesn’t affect them.
But I did live in poverty, I just got myself out of it (with the help of the UK).

Believe me I’ve had times when I had to choose between food or heating. But the IK allowed me to better myself

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:12

@MarshaBradyo oh that’s lucky then, phew! What about the rest of us, where should we go?

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:12

@CallMeAChopper yeah, it wouldn’t now. That’s the point. Lucky you.

You can get a skill set that is wanted o/s - Aus has a points system

Move abroad and start again

I did it, with nothing to start with. It takes some gumption but it’s possible

I don’t know, my son (22 years old) seems to be doing ok … he’s on more money than I am and he’s had no help from me (other than a shared mentality)

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:15

@MarshaBradyo so, just like a PP said above, the choice is ‘put up or move’?

What would you suggest to food bank users who would like to leave the UK?

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:15

@CallMeAChopper on benefits?

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:16

Also @CallMeAChopper does your son own his own house? Did he pay tuition fees? Did he get an apprenticeship?

You asked me what to do and I answered you

It’ll take hard work but if you want to leave that badly go for it. You’ll have to be gung go though and it’s not guaranteed your life will be roses somewhere else.

CallMeAChopper · 22/10/2021 21:17

No he’s worked since he was 13 (paper round - grocery store - Next - Greggs - back to Next - now at Siemens and doing very well indeed

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:17

@MarshaBradyo no - it’ll take money. You can’t ‘work hard’ your way out of poverty. It’s why the ‘just move if you don’t like what’s happened to the UK’ is such a ridiculous argument.

CallMeAChopper · 22/10/2021 21:17

No he doesn’t own his own house, he’s currently saving for a deposit

The average age for home owners in 2021 is 36.

Are you in poverty?

I’m answering for you personally - do you want to leave?

CallMeAChopper · 22/10/2021 21:20

Ah well, he’s happy where he is at the minute ☺️ Average house prices around here is £180k and that’s for a nice house in nice area.

He could get one for £90k if he wanted to but I expect he’ll hold out for better

ssd · 22/10/2021 21:20

Ok so I'll bite. It annoys me when the op asks people's opinions about life in England then clearly means life in the UK. There's more to the UK than England, believe it or not.

Pumperthepumper · 22/10/2021 21:20

@MarshaBradyo why are you asking me personally? What difference does it make? If I was a foodbank user who was fed up of being squeezed by endless UK austerity, could I hard work my way to Australia?

KaDeWeh · 22/10/2021 21:20

It's not Germany.

batmanladybird · 22/10/2021 21:20

Ooh I could do with some positivity.
Where i live is completely beautiful but only 60mins from London

Is he renting just now?
cjcghana · 22/10/2021 21:21

White Caucasian living in West Africa for past 17 years. Wouldn't live in UK again if I won the lottery. Problems here are huge but surmountable. I'll get slammed but if you want me to write a thesis on my reasons then I'd happily comply.

Hillary17 · 22/10/2021 21:21

Only expats will understand this fear. Having lived a great life abroad I was excited but also terrified to move home during a pandemic. That fear doesn’t mean England isn’t always going to be home but with Covid, NHS crisis, Brexit - it was a hard sell to convince me things would be okay. But honestly it’s the same old and nowhere near as bad as the papers make it out to be. I love being home, close to family, a decent cup of tea and normal weather!

CallMeAChopper · 22/10/2021 21:22

@Pumperthepumper yes he’s renting a flat

Because you said

What about the rest of us, where should we go?

Do you want to leave or not?

If so look into it, if not I hope you can improve your situation somehow

But start another thread as this is meant to be a positive one and enough people dump misery all over mn already.
