AIBU to not go to work because someone has a cold?

I’m 37 weeks pregnant and so baby is ready can come whenever.

I work as a Carer (1 to 1), and my lovely client has a bad cold. I've woken up this morning (Friday) with a swollen throat and stuffy nose.

I’m supposed to be working with him on Sunday but I am worried about me and him just passing it back and forth between us. I thought it would be better to wait until both of us have got over it before I do another shift. If I wasn’t pregnant and so close I wouldn’t care, but I really don’t want to be sick when I’ve got a newborn - incase I make them unwell and their lungs too small to cope.

So I was going to cancel my Sunday shift. I feel so guilty though because I know they’re gonna struggle to find cover. There has been sickness and absence in the team already this week from other staff so people are a bit stressed.

What do you guys think? Am I being dramatic over just a cold and should just go in? I'm a first time Mum so don't know if I'm just being silly.

If you’ve already caught it I don’t think it will make much difference if you go again?

But what if he starts to recover, then I go in on Sunday and give it back to him. And then I've got another week of work with him coughing everywhere again, and I'll just not shift it.

Once you have had the cold you cannot get it again.

Sirzy · 22/10/2021 08:46

Can you not just start maternity leave now?

OtterAndDog · 22/10/2021 08:47

I didn't know this. Just googled and you are correct! So I guess it doesn't make any difference now!

Still wouldn't solve the problem of them being short staffed on Sunday :( x

You shouldn't go because you've got a cold.
Presumably people needing 1-1 care don't have the luxury of saying "don't come today I don't want to give you my cold".

Watchingyou2sleezes · 22/10/2021 08:48

From the topic title yes,
From your circumstances - no, fuck that stay at home and put your feet up

RedHelenB · 22/10/2021 08:48

Either start maternity leave now or go to work. You've already got a cold so you won't get another one on top of it.

PersonaNonGarter · 22/10/2021 08:48

Yoi have good intentions but You need to start maternity leave as you are letting people down.

frazzlesmore · 22/10/2021 08:49

I think if you are off sick at this stage of pregnancy then you may have to start maternity leave depending upon your employer

Sorry should clarify that I've caught my cold directly from him

I think if you phone in sick close to your due date, it can trigger your maternity leave.

starrynight87 · 22/10/2021 09:39

I would start maternity leave and put yourself first.
