Emma Watson Wedding Dresses

All those at the Earth shot Awards were asked to wear outfits that considered the environment-I suppose this means second hand or worn before. At any rate, that's what they did.

Along comes Emma Watson with her Harris Reed designed dress, made from 10 upcycled wedding dresses from Oxfam.

AIBU to think that if Emma really cared about this sort of stuff-as she often says she does-she would have left the 10 wedding dresses in Oxfam, so that 10 people would have been able to recycle 10 dresses-with the added bonus that they would have been affordable for those people.

Instead, she takes all ten of them and chops them up, thus showing herself to be an over-privileged hypocrite, who cares more about making a headline than 'saving the planet' or thinking about the women who could have made real use of those dresses.

Surely she had something else in her wardrobe that she could have used.

Tbh Op you come across as someone that hates Emma Watson and you're just looking for any old reason to put the boot in.

I'm pretty certain Oxfam second hand wedding dresses aren't such a rare and sought after item that EW is denying someone else. OP sounds like she's desperately reaching for something to complain about.

ChristmasFluff · 24/10/2021 13:33

So according to you, OP, I shouldn't buy a coat from Oxfam, and cut it up to make a jacket and shorts, because I'm depriving someone of a coat?

And as for the Great British Sewing Bee.....

KingsleyShacklebolt · 24/10/2021 13:37

Not just someone, @ChristmasFluff. A "poor person".

The "Charity" bit in Charity shop is because the money raised goes to charity not because it sells 2nd hand clothes as a charitable act.

Disabrie22 · 24/10/2021 14:44

I’ve just seen it - it’s awful - I genuinely believe I could have made something better myself!

PackedintheUK · 24/10/2021 14:46

I thought it was a very strange thing to do, but tbh I thought the whole event was a bit weird.

It wasn't very nice either and I bet there were plenty of new bits in it.

"Charity" shops are, you may be surprised to discover, are run along the same lines as commercial businesses. Their main motivation is to raise money for the charity of choice; many donators chose a particular shop because they support that charity.

Yes, the prices attract people on low incomes, it's great to help a person that needs a fancy wedding outfit, or a funeral suit, an interview outfit or kids clothes/toys etc we all know how useful that is.

The shops also have to make rent in whichever location they are in. They also have strict guidelines on stuff like electricals and DVD's etc. They have to pay to have crap they cannot sell taken away.

Charity shops need to be able to price effectively; there are guidelines on this.
They need to make £'s because they have targets. Yes, serving the local community is also an objective, but it's really not the prevailing objective.

They also need to be laid out in ways that adhere to H&S. Volunteers need to be managed. Managers are paid and, the same as commercial managers need to be business minded to create seasonal display, rotate stock etc.

Donators also donate to a particular shop because they can stop outside and effectively do a fly tip. Donators also donate because they've got great stuff that is used but sellable, and someone may benefit. Donators also donate because who wouldn't want their used pants/socks and kids clothes still with ketchup and pasta stuck to them?

Upcycling is a huge part of being environmentally friendly. Many times it takes more than one old piece to make a new fasionable one.
Wearing something that you have in your wardrobe is another option indeed.
There is nothing wrong at all with any of the options.
All within the spirit of the event, I think.
