To ask what car do you drive?

I am searching for a new car. Is your car any good and would you recommend it? My maximum budget is around £15,000, could push it a bit higher if it’s really good but ideally not. Thanks

VW Polo. It’s perfect for just me or the two of us at weekends but I wouldn’t fancy getting a pushchair plus shopping in the boot.
I have no idea what they cost new but we have ours on finance and upgrade every 4 years. Touch wood, we’ve never had any repairs to pay for or any breakdowns and the fuel efficiency is amazing.

Ilovechristmasasmuchasiloveyou · 21/10/2021 16:26

I drive an Audi Q3. Its big enough for a family of 4. Two bulky car seats in the back. Spacious boot. Only got it last year, took it on holiday this year and managed to get everything in it.
Its comfortable for motorway drives too. Which I do a lot of.

bloodywhitecat · 21/10/2021 16:33

SEAT Tarraco but a bit over your budget I think. It's the first car that we have had that's been able to fit the double buggy and the dog in the boot.

Libertaire · 21/10/2021 16:41

A Mercedes SLC, it’s a two seater convertible with a folding hard top. I love it because I can get the lid down any time the weather is good, yet with it up, it feels like a normal coupé. It’s great to drive, a fantastic compromise between sporty & comfortable. It’s not the most practical car, obviously, but I can get two cases in the boot so it’s fine as my only car. We even did a touring holiday in Germany in it a few years ago.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/10/2021 16:42

What everyone else said - how many of you are there, any ULEZ/ similar requirements, how much do you drive, in what conditions, how much storage space do you need etc etc?

I have a Citroen Berlingo to accommodate my zillion children and their crap. I traded in my Mercedes sedan for it and thought I’d hate it, but it’s lovely to drive. I have a near-identical car in van format for work.

clockover · 21/10/2021 16:44

@Pyewackect

I drive a 1998 Land Rover Defender. Love it but the new ones are so expensive, altho the older ones are too !.

This is my dream motor Grin

I have a SEAT Alhambra which is a decent 7 seater but looking to downsize next year when it's due it's MOT

FrenchyQ · 21/10/2021 16:48

VW id3. Such a nice car to drive.

edwinbear · 21/10/2021 17:13

I've just swapped a Merc SLK (non ULEZ) for a convertible BMW 335. The SLK was more fun to drive, but bought pre-DC. The BMW is far more practical as it has 4 seats, convertible but with a hard top, DH says it's as fast as the SLK but I don't feel it, it's heavier. I do love it though, looks amazing with the roof down and makes the kids squeal Grin. Cost me £12k and does about 2mpg

Nutrigrainygoodness · 21/10/2021 17:21

We have a VW scirocco. Love it, but it's not a practical family car, it only has 4 seats and it doesn't have back doors, and the front doors are so heavy.
It was our we are done with kids car. Dd was 10 when we got it, so she didn't need help with seat belts or anything 😁
Dw loves it, but she thought about selling it to buy something electric and I nearly cried.
We also have a boring practical family car.

Cheeseplantboots · 21/10/2021 17:24

I’ve got a bmw gran tourer, 2018. It’s a lovely car to drive, economical and can have seven seats. Loads of leg space and boot space.

DeepaBeesKit · 21/10/2021 17:26

Mazda cx5. Love it. Very reliable, never seems to need repairs. Pleasant interior. My only minor gripe is that for a car/chassis that wide, the middle rear seat is as narrow as they come. If you have a third kid its maybe not for you.

NotMyCat · 21/10/2021 17:26

VW polo which is my car, it's reliable and roomy enough. Or whatever I've managed to pinch from work they've not let me at the new defender yet

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/10/2021 17:27

2011 Nissan Micra.

It has rear doors and enough room for DDs car seat, it's small enough for me to park easily, very economical and plenty of boot space for our needs.

Oneforthemoneytwo · 21/10/2021 17:29

Mini Countryman. Best car ever. It drives beautifully, mine has all the bells and whistles, reasonable to run, high driving position, feels spacious but small enough to park easily.

BeetleyCarapace · 21/10/2021 17:41

Unless OP comes back and fills in the brief a bit this thread is just going to be a load of random people shouting about cars Grin

thegcatsmother · 21/10/2021 18:00

Saab 93 Sportswagon. Can fit so much in it,did the university run stuffed to the gunnels for years. Very reliable, and I won't be changing it til I have to.

amusedbush · 21/10/2021 18:10

I have a Suzuki Ignis and I would not recommend it. It’s incredibly light so it feels like it will tip over when taking sharp corners or going around roundabouts. I had to stop driving for days on end last winter because the slightest hint of snow or ice and the back end would slide around. It lost all traction three times, almost slid into oncoming traffic when braking gently at a junction and I was, frankly, terrified. I even booked it into the garage to be checked because I thought there was something wrong with the wheels.

Apparently not, it’s just really light and drives like shite in the winter.

spanieleyes · 21/10/2021 18:34

Ford B-max. It's, errmm, practical😂

ItsAllMumboJumbo · 21/10/2021 18:35

I suppose it depends whether you drive, drive or just drive. I have a sports car that's like a rocket, its tiny but the engine is huge
I love it, so much fun
What do you need it for?

Coogee · 21/10/2021 18:39

An American 4x4. I love it but I wouldn’t recommend it unless are happy with MPG in the mid 20s.

Saskatcha · 21/10/2021 18:41

We had similar budget. Went for a SEAT Leon 1L (1yr old with 8k miles).?It drives very well. A bit lower than our old car (an Altea which they don’t make anymore or I’d have got it again). Also looked at a Golf, a Kia Ceed and a 308. I liked the 308 best but my husband vetoed the panoramic roof.

Coogee · 21/10/2021 18:41

unless you are

Dizzyhedgehog · 21/10/2021 18:47

I have a Peugeot 307 SW. It's got a spacious boot and the back has enough space for two isofix car seats. I bought it nearly 3 years ago when we moved abroad and I needed a "non-UK" car. It was a lot less than 15k, though. We had a 207SW diesel before and that was surprisingly good as well.
Our next car will most likely be either a Ford Grand C-Max or another Peugeot...possibly a 5008 model.
It really depends on your needs. My parents have a Q5 and a little two-seater convertible.

Meggie2008 · 21/10/2021 18:59

A SEAT Ibiza, I love it but depends on what you need

Hedgesgalore · 21/10/2021 19:35

Volvo XC90 (old shape).

Absolutely adore it and totally fulfils its purpose as a load lugger.
This is my second, went back to an XC90 after finding the V90 Cross Country was too small.
