AIBU to hope for a Scale and Polish?

I went earlier in the year (Practice was closed fully and then hard to get an appt); check-up, exam, no S&P although "needed", and small cosmetic filling (mix of NHS and Private).

Not long afterwards the filling came out (between two teeth, not in) and I rang to go back, and also asked about S&P, but told that it needed a separate (longer) appt due to CoVid/aerosols etc. Booked that for a few weeks later.

This appt was then moved twice by the Practice (I think a Dentist left or something) - and I finally attended yesterday. Did a full exam again and he sort of complained a little to the Nurse about "not knowing why this was down for a S&P". (I had not seen this one before, he said he was new. I usually see one particular lady wh understands me very well - although she was also the one who put n the filling tha fell out....)

I said, well it's OK, don't do the S&P (nicely I hope), and he just said that it is considered a waste of resources. For me though, I do see it as rather preventative and to hopefully prevent a problem from getting worse?

So it was done - but even then, there was no "Polish" - unless I am misremembering - with a tiny brush and what feels like toothpaste? I know I am whinging - I didn't in person though, saved it for here - but is it unreasonblle to hope that I would get the full procedure, having particuarly requested - and needed - it?

Maybe someone ese has experienceed similar, or a dental nurse or dentist is on here who could clarfiy for me?

My (fully private) dentist is doing hygienist appointments including scale and polish. It seems you can still get services if you pay through the nose. But you can get fuck all on the NHS right now.

TheSoapyFrog · 21/10/2021 10:32

I had a dentist appointment recently and they've asked me to book in for a separate scale and polish. It is an NHS dentist, but I do have to pay myself for it, albeit cheaper than private I guess.

DumbestBlonde · 21/10/2021 10:50

Yes, they told me that the S&P appt - which was what I thought I was going for; no other exam as it had been done "recently, when I actually first booked the appointment - would be for a longer time, due to to extra gowning and masking.

I just feel that referring to it as a "waste of resources" was strange (I don't think he meant the extra PPE) - and also, I only got the Scale, not the Polish..... (pout)

I would gladly pay, even though I am in an exempt group - and DO pay for things like tooth-coloured fillings.

My friend's duaghter - nearly 19 - is "happy" to pay (at the same Dentist as me) - but still gets delays and the run-around, and also cannot even get an appointment with the specialist that she needs (orthodontics) until well into next year.

I had a dentist appointment and was offered a quick manual scale (with the handheld scrapy thing), or to book in with the hygienist separately who would do a more thorough cleaning with water I believe?

Viviennemary · 21/10/2021 10:59

I think the polish isn't being done by the dentists because of the spray effect of the cleaner thing. Hygienists do it and wear protective clothing but it takes much longer to prepare.

LampLighter414 · 21/10/2021 11:13

How bad do your teeth have to be to be offered a S&P? I remember my mum always getting them when I was younger, wouldn't have said her teeth were bad. I have never been offered one but certainly wouldn't say no to cleaner and shinier teeth?

Boopeedoop · 21/10/2021 11:32

It's an aerosol generating procedure.
NHS dentists don't have time for the clean down that is required.

Hygienists are private and can book the appropriate time slots and have time to do the clean down required. They also have to wear higher level PPE which the dentist's won't wear all day.

TheVampiresWife · 21/10/2021 12:21

My NHS dentist is no longer doing s&p on the NHS. If I want one I have to pay for them to do it privately, at a cost of £120, which I can't afford.

It's because Covid, of course.

Icebreaker99 · 21/10/2021 12:26

Can you book to see the hygienist? I had a dentist do a scale and polish but I couldn't notice any difference after, only seen a difference with the private hygienist, I'm looking forward to them offering Air Flow again as that really gets the teeth sparkling!

Feetupteashot · 21/10/2021 12:29

I think they might scale a bit off but not in same appt as a filling

I had a hygienist appt and it really bloody hurt! Don't want to go back to her

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2021 12:29

My old dentist always did a scale and polish. He went private. My new one doesn't. So I don't even come out with that really clean feeling. They wanted a £30 deposit for a hygienist appointment. I'd have made the appointment at the time, but objected to that size if deposit!

Wingedharpy · 21/10/2021 12:32

My dentist hasn't done scale and polish for years.
There is a hygienist at the practice who I see for this treatment/care.

I would interpret the " waste of resources" remark to be along the lines of the dentist can be treating more folk if they aren't spending time undertaking procedures that could be done by someone else.

wheresmyshoe · 21/10/2021 12:44

I'm with an NHS dentist and have to make a separate hygienist appointment for a scale and polish, it is £49.

Dentists atm are just a total nightmare.

We had an NHS dentist but they were so terrible we were terrified to go. I had a filling fall out 4 times in 6 months. So many local horror stories, total nightmare.

We have 2 small DC and Im still exempt for maternity so should be free but we’ve now had to go private to get urgent work done. Honestly I’m disgusted by the HUGE difference. 2 fillings done totally pain free, neither has fallen out, much more pleasant experience, scale & Polish as we like, plenty of time no rushing. It’s going to have cost us about £1k over 6 months for all the work we needed. Over £500 of that should have been free as for me. It’s killing us financially but no good dentist around here will touch NHS right now. Won’t even do a waiting list.

CarrotSticks23 · 21/10/2021 13:47

It all depends really if you needed a scale and polish. It sounds like the new dentist didn't think you did. You shouldn't book yourself in for a scale and polish on the NHS unless the dentist has put it on your treatment plan.

You would need a repeat exam if it's been more than 3 months since your last exam for NHS treatment. Again you can't just book yourself in for a scale and polish on the NHS, the dentist needs to form a treatment plan. You pay the same whether you have an exam and a S&P or an S&P (essentially a basic S&P is free), so it doesn't change for you but for the dentist to get paid for the session they need to do the exam. Essentially the dentist does not get paid for the scale and polish, and neither will the practice. And it won't get the money needed for the additional, resources so that is possibly what the dentist meant. NhS dentistry is in short supply and potentially an appointment for a scale and polish that's not really needed on the NHS is a waste when that appointment could have gone to someone in pain

A polish is to remove staining, it is aesthetic and therefore most dentists won't do it on the NHS, if you want a polish you should see a hygenist privately.
