To ask about Aldershot

Evening,

I wasn't successful trying for the Farnham property...landlord decided to go with someone else...
Is Aldershot not to be considered an option? I know it's referred to as Aldersh*t, and all posts on here, say a lot of negative things about it?

What is is like, in terms of diversity, racism, etc and is it best to be avoided?

I'm aiming to find a place within north-west Surrey to at some point for work...

There's a property in Aldershot, which seems quite nice, slightly out of my preferred budget, but whilst it's nice, I don't want to try and negotiate it down if the area is all sorts of negative... or should I go and view and see?

Harsh

It's pretty deprived. No decent town center to speak of. Lots of community tensions as there is a huge Nepalese community that the white working class somewhat dislike.
Farnham is much nicer.

Quirkyme · 20/10/2021 20:40

Okay, yeah I'll deffo stay await and be patient until the right place comes along, thank you

Town centre is being redeveloped, and if you care to look then there is a strong sense of community, only being improved upon by our Nepali community. You’ll get a house much bigger than one for the same price in Farnham. Lots of lovely parks and nature reserves, stunnng countryside surrounding the town. It’s what you make of it really.

Yeah, the property I'm looking at... is really big, it's nice..... that's the only pull

Actually Aldershot is improving. New development called Wellesley, new primary school (Cambridge Primary), great Health Centre. The 'white working class' have no problem with the Nepali community - there are bigots everywhere including Farnham which is virtually monocultural. Aldershot has a diverse community of all sorts of religions and nationalities and all these communities have pulled together over this pandemic. While there are indeed a few grotty streets close to the centre, the outskirts are nice. It has a fabulous Lido, a direct trainline into London in under an hour, and a pretty good theatre - the Princes Hall - and Arts Centre - the West End Centre. Two good secondary schools flank it - All Hallows in Farnham and Wavell on the Aldershot/Farnborough border.

Hey, thanks for your response.... I'm not sure where the property I'm thinking to view is , whether it's in the centre or outskirts to be honest...

All Hallows is Catholic, don't know what the chances are of getting in if not Catholic?

I don't have children, so not concerned about school places

All Hallows is a decent school. Aldershot isn't nearly as nice as farnham though. The Nepalese community are one of the best things about it. Such a nice community of people and really inclusive.

Elephantsparade · 20/10/2021 21:09

I like Aldershot. Its not 'lovely' like Farnham but its fine with good amenities.

Fruitflylady · 20/10/2021 21:28

I think half of the reason for the high house prices in Farnham is down to schools, so if you don’t have kids then that removes that from your list of concerns! Parts of Aldershot are virtually in Farnham anyway so depending where you end up it’s just as easy to get into Farnham town centre as Aldershot.
For what’s worth, I really like Aldershot, and have made many lovely, genuine, down to earth friends there.
Good luck with your decision!

AshGirl · 20/10/2021 21:41

There are loads of good points about Aldershot, but it isn't 'naice' like Farnham.

You will get a lot for your money in Aldershot (which is why we moved here) and if you are in the West End of town then you are very close to Farnham anyway. Try to get close to Rowhill Nature Reserve or Caesars Camp if you like green spaces, or Wellesley by Tescos.

We moved from london about 7 years ago and are very happy here. We could live a 5 minute walk from the farnham borders but could not justify the jump in house prices. The locals are lovely. Our neighbour are ace . Lots of middle class aspirational hard working people in Aldershot who are very happy living somewhere diverse. Which (in MHO ) you do not get in all areas of Surrey. Town could be better but near other places to socialise and lots of independent food outlets in town.

MSSD · 22/11/2021 21:39

Find it frustrating that people diss the area as it is ace

Like anywhere, there are positives and negative aspects of living in Aldershot. I’ve lived here most of my life and have never had anything bad to say about it.

The town centre is now a little limited in terms of shops, but there still places to get the essentials and more shopping options in nearby towns. In fact, one of the best things about Aldershot is the proximity to other towns - within 20 minutes drive or a short train ride there is Farnham for the posh/boutiquey vibe, Guildford for shopping/nightlife, and Camberley/Farnborough for more traditional “town-centre” experiences. It’s also just over an hour to Waterloo on the train.

I’d visit the property you’re considering to get a feel for the area, maybe go for a walk around the surrounding streets and chat to some dog walkers about living here (we have a lot of dog walkers and most people are really friendly!).
