I am handing in my notice period for my job with immediate effect. I am going to call my GP to be signed off with my mental health for the duration of my notice period, I’m not coping mentally and I need to leave.

My concern is that I’m claiming universal credit, will I be sanctioned for leaving the job? Even if it’s for mental health reasons?
My partner is working 30 hours a week and our son is 3 years old.

How do I let universal credit know? I’m really anxious about it all, but I can’t continue with the job as I’m not feeling well mentally.

Thanks if you can help

Not sure resigning when off sick is a great idea. I would see your GP first. The GP may not even sign you off for your notice period.

It would be deemed you making yourself intentionally unemployed .... the way they will see it is that you could have continued being paid sick pay then ESA while still being technically employed and may have become well enough during that period to return. This would mean a sanction and potentially not being paid universal credit.

I think you need to talk to citizens advice so you can make sure you aren't making life harder for yourself.

Forgot to add I’m in my probation period. I really can’t go back there. I honestly feel suicidal at the thought of it.
Do you think it’s unlikely the GP would sign me off? Even though I feel so low I mean.

I didn't mean to worry you about getting signed off. I think the GP will sign you off but its hard to say for how long that's why I said not to rush into resigning.

I would definitely go to your gp first of all, before resigning. They should sign you off sick, at least for a week so you can make plans. Then go to citizens advice.
