To wonder why so few hairdressers do curly hair cuts

I live in an area swamped with hairdressers. Keratin blow drys and curly blow drys are two a penny. But try getting a curly deva cut. I have found one fairly local salon with a wait of months , otherwise it’s a drive to Manchester or Birmingham.

I don’t want to drive for miles I don’t have time. There are at least 8 fancy hairdressers local to me. I’m genuinely wondering why this isn’t something more widely available?

@Piggywaspushed

The worst is when they get curling tongs out. Then you know they know they have killed your curls.
This reminds me of the time I was having my hair done for a wedding and the hairdresser straightened my hair and then curled it again! I have 3b hair and will do heatless techniques like foam rollers or Flexi rods, but heat twice in a row, never ever.

My London experience is out of date but sure enough the one I liked best was Greek and had curls very similar to mine. My current stylist is Black and does both Black and white hair, but she specialises in natural hair (she doesn't do straightening, weaves, etc)

I have 2c/3a hair with the occasional really strong curl thrown in. The curl by curl cut is really only useful for those that have a consistent curl pattern and who will wear it curly all the time

3A curls have a very uniform, consistent curl pattern. They all curl from the root with no s-wave in between root and spiral. The curls look the same and don’t lose their shape when slept on or styled with heavy product.

2C tends to have a variety of curl types; it’s normal to have a mixture of spirals, waves and ringlets.

Sounds like your hair is 2C?

Are you in Leeds? I'm just guessing- I know the salon you're talking about with a wait of months, if so, and while their styling is amazing, their cuts are only so-so. At least in my experience!

Ask for Tom at Renegades Salon in the city centre- much cheaper and less of a wait. He has gorgeous curly hair himself and does a genuinely good curly haircut.

@Cookerhood

Anyone know of anywhere in Bucks, Herts or Berkshire? My hairdresser doesn't do a bad job, but she does cut it as if it's straight hair.
Try Roni in Staines. Not in the three counties you mentioned but he can cut wavy and curly hair
BigYellowHat · 24/10/2021 18:35

I never knew this was a ‘thing’. Sorry for all the curly haired people on here having difficulties 😢

FateHasRedesignedMost · 24/10/2021 18:39

my curls are back to their 3b /3c glory

What type of straightener did you use for 3b/3C? Do you mean you had it relaxed then straightened it?

3B curls are springy ringlets the diameter of a piece of chalk or pen, 3C even tighter with more volume and consistent curl at the root.

I’m glad you feel able to celebrate your curly hair now. I have 2C hair (spirals, loose ringlets and some s-waves) and recently started wearing it curly all the time, also thanks to CGM.

@TertiusLydgate
Where do you contact Lindsay Hughes please ? I am near Farringdon

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/10/2021 19:22

I had a hair cut yesterday
What kind of curl do you think I have? And what do you think of the finish ( just ruffled it with damp fingers today)

MC68 · 24/10/2021 19:28

30 years, at least, of not having my hair cut by a hairdresser; naturally corkscrewed fine hair.
Had it completely demolished in the past by hairdressers saying they know how to cut curly hair but clearly can’t, as the end result showed, left me never having faith in visiting another one again.

TertiusLydgate · 24/10/2021 19:45

Thighdentitycrisis her website

She has actually just moved from Farringdon to Spitalfields, but that's not too far?

GoodnightGrandma · 24/10/2021 19:49

What’s a deva cut ? I’ve got curly hair and just go to my local salon

PlasticOrchid · 24/10/2021 19:53

Does anyone know of a hairdresser near Harrogate? My 14 year old despairs and ends up with it tied back all the time.

KnottyKnitting · 24/10/2021 19:55

My DD has beautifully natural angel curl hair. She recently had it cut at a new hairdresser near where she now lives in London and was amazed at the difference with a hairdresser that seemed to genuinely understand curly hair. Despite being on London it was about 2/3 of the price she last paid in our commuter town.

@wizzywig

I found mine through the Only Curls (hair care range) website. They have a directory of hairdressers
Thanks for the tip - was a bit tricky to find the directory on their site, but very helpful. Here's a direct link for anyone who needs it onlycurls.com/pages/salon-stockists

@Notimeforaname

Yep I feel your pain. Partner and I both have extremely curly hair.

After 2 years of looking,he found a salon with one hairdresser who said they would do it Hmm I havnt been to a hairdresser in 20 years because of it. I trim it myself...dry.

I do this with my son. He has beautiful curls and he is ten. I've always cut it .

Your hair is absolutely gorgeous 💕

Livingmybestlifenow · 24/10/2021 23:15

@Cookerhood
Try Gorgeous in Berkhamsted, Herts…Kelsey and Adam both have curly hair experience.

MC68 · 24/10/2021 23:55

@Enterifyoudare

Last time I went to the hairdressers, the fresh out of training apprentice couldn't even do a blow dry. I don't hold much hope for her being able to style curly hair.

I have been to hairdressers who are good with my hair, because they have curly hair themselves. One absolutely got it spot on when she described it as hard work hair. Mine looks good curly or straight, but fuck me it's hard work getting either Angry

I was told to ask the hairdresser who has curly hair who cuts their hair if it looks good!!

It's beautiful. Would you say type 3b?
FateHasRedesignedMost · 25/10/2021 06:44

2C I think, beautiful wavy curls.

All the curl charts I’ve seen (the non-whitewashed charts) describe 2A as beachy waves, 2B as more defined waves, 2C a mixture of loose spiral curls and S-shaped waves with a few ringlet curls. The tell-tale sign of 2C is an S-shaped wave at the root before the spiral starts, rather than a ringlet springing from the root.

3A the curls begin straight from the root, are uniform and coarser, with lots of volume. It can take heavier product without getting weighed down. You don’t get a mix of curl types like hair in the 2s.

3B is similar but the curls are tighter (the width of a sharpie I think) and 3C curls tighter still (the width of a pencil, again the same width from root to end).

Hair in the 4s also has 4A, 4B, 4C, but you’d need someone more knowledgeable than me to explain the differences. It’s often referred to as coily not curly and needs different care and styling.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 25/10/2021 06:47

This is type 3B

To wonder why so few hairdressers do curly hair cuts
TheGallopingGourmet · 25/10/2021 06:56

I went to a specialist Hairdresser in Manchester for people with curly hair. I wanted my curly hair washed and then styled with a loose wave. I explained the problem I had was that Hairdressers would curl my hair (tightly) on straighteners and rely on it "dropping"during the day. My hair does not "drop". It holds a curl very well and will stay until it is washed. The Hairdresser listened, said he understood what I was asking for. He curled my hair on straighteners and then tried to loosen the curls with a large barrelled brush and hairdryer. My hair was having none if it. He spent quite some time doing this. Eventually he said it would "drop" during the day. It didn't...........

MrsDThomas · 25/10/2021 07:06

I have naturally curly hair and i find it difficult too. Used to be long and full of volume think julia roberts in pretty woman. I had it cut every 2 years as I could not find a decent hairstylist.

Now i have! I have cut a lot off, its choppier, bouncier and its bloody great!!

It really should be included in L2 & 3 in hair styling. Perms are compulsory, and its not easy getting people in.

MrsDThomas · 25/10/2021 07:09

Oh, but it always dry my own hair there. Always up side down. They dont get that bit, they thinks you fiddle about with a diffuser and leave it damp. You dont do that. You dry it properly.

They don’t charge me for it.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 25/10/2021 07:24

I don't know why they don't and even if they blow dry it, half of them don't seem to know how fo blow dry curly hair straight either. It's like a lost skill 😂
