To worry about cats and the milkman?

We've got a milk delivery service and I am habitually awake late enough at night to hear him turning up at our house.

Ernie (for it must be he) comes tearing up the road (residential estate sort of thing), actually screeches to a halt outside our house, delivers the milk all fine (never had a cracked bottle or anything) then takes off as if the hounds of hell were after him.

It doesn't bother me too much in terms of noise and speed on a quiet road at a quiet time. But there are a lot of cats in the area, including mine, and I tense up the whole time I hear him driving, stopping and tearing off because he's so likely to kill one of them one night.

YABU: ffs have you got nothing else to worry about, he's probably on a tight schedule

YANBU: Running over a cat because you were going too fast is stupid and irresponsible

I'd be more worried about Sue from No 22

Mamamia7962 · 19/10/2021 15:28

Do you also have Two Ton Ted the Baker?

AnkleDeep · 19/10/2021 15:30

If you're worried keep them in. Letting them roam is always going to be a risk. It's up to you.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/10/2021 15:50

Oh I thought this was going to be about some illicit affair between your cats and the milkman. I'm a bit disappointed really.

godmum56 · 19/10/2021 15:57

@Babybellblue

To all the people saying keep cats in at night.. have you ever owned a cat?? Some cats will literally scream the house down and probably destroy it if kept inside against their will.
that's why you build a catio or cat proof fencing
AmyDudley · 19/10/2021 15:59

I would leave a note in a milkbottle saying 'please watch out for cats when driving at night' or something like that.
Also is it possible to get flourescent collars fro cats so they show up more at night - might increase the chances that milkman sees them.

Nsky · 19/10/2021 16:16

Keeping cats in at night is cruel, mine has chip reading cat flap, very handy

Palavah · 19/10/2021 16:19

@Babdoc

Why are you having milk delivered separately? That’s two lots of vans, including your supermarket delivery, or extra petrol if you drive to the supermarket. Milk keeps for about ten days in the fridge. I get 8 pints a week with my Sainsbugs delivery, and top up if necessary from the village Spar.
Electric vehicle, glass bottles which are reused, better than plastic cartons.
ChickenGotLegs · 19/10/2021 16:39

I prefer my cats out at night rather than during the day. Im semi rural so it's not that busy but there's less traffic for a start.

I also get my milk delivered, 4 years now and I've never clapped eyes on my milkman once, just caught the taillights of his van leaving one night. He's like a ninja milkman 😆

I get my milk delivered because it comes from somewhere local and the farmer is paid a decent price for it. Rather than the supermarket.

The glass bottles are more environmentally friendly than the plastic cartons as well.

ClawedButler · 19/10/2021 16:41

I'd have thought getting milk delivered by an electric vehicle was better for the environment than using a shedload of plastic. Personally, I don't touch the stuff, it's for my husband and daughter.

It's only more of a concern than other road users because it really does go FAST. Wheels skidding, screeching, the lot. You'd think it was a formula one car the way he tries to thrash it.

It's also not just my cats I'm worried about, it's all their enemies along the street. Ginger Fuzz, Angry Bella, Black Shouter (I don't know their real names obv), they're all out at night, and I wouldn't want any of them squashed ideally.

Ha! Wish ours was a ninja. He's more of a beserker I reckon.

Sounds like he's the fastest milkman in the west Grin
Babybellblue · 19/10/2021 16:47

Just told my boy he is to have a catio and be cat proof fenced in. He is now packing his bags Confused

Pantah630 · 19/10/2021 16:48

I'm more concerned one of mine will hitch a ride on the float and not be able to get off.

Notebooksarefabulous · 19/10/2021 20:29

Weird complaints on this thread - 1why not stop having milk? 2 Why have it delivered?
1 I have oat milk as well as dairy milk. The dairy milk comes from a farm only 6 miles away.
2 By having it delivered (along with bread and other stuff he sells) Im paying him £2 extra per week than I would be paying a supermarket but in doing so Im supporting my local independent milkie - less money to Tesco, more to him.

Few cats on our street. I cant help but wonder why the need to always deliver at 2 30am though as ours does.

TroysMammy · 19/10/2021 20:50

@Babybellblue all my previous cats would be waiting on the doorstep to come in at 9pm. My current cat comes in at around 6pm and stays in all night.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/10/2021 21:02

You need to tell him to watch out for rock cakes and pork pies not cats

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 19/10/2021 21:06

@JaneDoe21

Why are your cats out late at night anyway? I would just keep them in after a certain time I do with mine. :)
If you don't like your carpet and sleep with ear plugs you'd be ok to keep one of my cats in at night at your house then. I try every night. Winter we manage it. Nice evenings? Not a chance

OP everyone should drive sensibly in built up areas. The thought crosses my mind everytime I hear someone driving like a dick outside my house
