To want broadband only (no TV or extras) and ask for recommendations?

As part of my complete budget overhaul I am looking in to where we as a family can save money, and being stuck with a TV package from Virgin has always been a bugbear anyway.

Both me and DH WFH and us and the kids ALL watch TV through Netflix etc. We pay a TV licence but never watch anything from the BBC (by complete coincidence, not actively avoiding) and to get Broadband through virgin they keep insisting we need a TV package. I downgraded right to the basic and it's still £75 a month for hundreds of channels I don't use and a landline we don't even have installed.

Can anyone recommend a decent broadband only service?

We have 200Mb Virgin with no TV. It’s about £50.

Luckytattie · 19/10/2021 10:28

I think shell energy do broadband only and then if you switch to get electricity from them you get a discount on your broadband :)
I could refer you as a friend and you can take a look. Of you PM me you're email address?

Who is your mobile provider? We have Vodafone super fast and it’s about £22 including line rental.

Sparklfairy · 19/10/2021 10:37

I got a similar deal to this with Shell -76mps for £21.99. Also get £75 credit after the third month so basically 3.5mths free broadband.

Virgin do Broadband and phone deals, certainly don't need to get TV too,

SolemnlySwear2010 · 19/10/2021 10:43

We have recently just changed from Sky to NowTV - Sky used to cost £85 per month, we are now £25 per month and that includes unlimited fibre broadband, phone line/calls, and the movies/entertainment TV package.

We use Netflix/ Prime/Disney for 90% of our viewing but we enjoyed the movies via Sky so this is the best of both worlds and much cheaper!

FreedomFaith · 19/10/2021 10:45

I'd advise trying a comparison website. Does it for you, and you can see what it will be like in your area. A company can be brilliant in one area for connections, and useless in others. No point buying something that is useless. Just compare it and you'll get the cheapest best deal easier.

trumpisagit · 19/10/2021 10:52

Is it because you have signed up to a contract with virgin?
We have virgin broadband and phone only £45 per month.
200mbs

BarbaraofSeville · 19/10/2021 10:58

We have Virgin broadband only for £28 a month for fast fibre. We have no TV contracts and pay only for the TV licence because we do watch BBC and then tend to have one or two of Prime, Netflix, Now TV where we just chop and change depending on what's on.

If you don't watch live TV or use the BBC iplayer, you don't need a TV licence.

We started with a deal with Virgin and when the contract came to an end, I called them and asked for another deal to stay or else I would swap to another provider. Straight away they brought it down from the out of contract price of around £50 pm to £28 pm.

If you're not in a TV contract with Virgin, you don't need to have it, we've been with them for years and never had their TV services.

Bells3032 · 19/10/2021 10:59

previously had virgin with just broadband. then had Sky with just broadband and now bt just broadband (it did come with a free phone line but we never use it).

Sky was dreadful. the other two i had no issues with

jetadore · 19/10/2021 11:02

We got BT for about £30pm, but with a £120 cashback credit card. Was a couple of months ago so they might stil be doing it. They also put in fibre to the premises for free.

delilahbucket · 19/10/2021 11:04

We have broadband with Plusnet. I like how easy it was to renew the contract. I didn't have to call and negotiate a new price, they actually dropped the price on last time and just a few clicks and it was done. The switch to them was seamless last year too.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 19/10/2021 11:05

www.plus.net/broadband/

We live rurally and getting a provider that bothers was important.

I know you said broadband only but it does include a landline and I have my mobile on it, on the Mates Rates deal, £5/month. I run my business from my phone.

MrsHGWells · 19/10/2021 11:07

Virgin fibre - the use other provider
Rs for specific programs needs - can access sky by Roku / itv / Netflix/

Sky is cheaper brought unbundled with other providers than within house bundle that is extremely difficult to unsubscribe from.

MiloAndEddie · 19/10/2021 11:15

We’re with EE and it’s £24 for broadband only, think it’s fibre. It’s definitely good enough to cope with me WFH and two others watching Netflix on separate TVs at the same time. They do a faster one but I figure no point paying more for something I don’t need

Woeismethischristmas · 19/10/2021 11:19

Have you considered just using a mobile router. Unlimited broadband for less than 20 quid a month. I’ve had four kids on devices plus streaming to the tv at the same time and it’s fine. We’re rural as well.

The router cost 70 quid initially. You can plug a phone in and so I use my mobile sim as I’m generally at home. I was paying 38 quid a month for slower broadband plus landline to bt.

Horst · 19/10/2021 11:24

We pay £48 for Vodafone gigafast fibre 500mb up and down pro plan package.

Wouldn’t touch virgin with a barrage bole their super fast 200mb was always dropping in and out.

Ghoulette · 19/10/2021 20:01

Thank you all!!

To answer, I am contracted with Virgin yes. At the end of the last contract I said I want out because I don't use TV and they said they would lower the price and restrict the package, which they did, but said I would have to keep basic TV and pay £75 which was, according to them, the lowers. I am now coming to the end of the contract and actually would rather jump ship given that it's now clear they could have offered me a better deal WITHOUT TV like I asked for!

Will go over some of the suggestions here Smile Literally just use internet for gaming, streaming etc and don't watch anything live or from the BBC!
