It's not good for you, surely?

It looks brutal, they aren't gentle, the reaction of the person doesn't appear to be positive and Ive never heard of benefits to cracking your knuckles so what would be the benefit of having your next or spine forcefully cracked?

I don't know about the danger to backs & necks by DS's rheumatologist said that there was no harm in him cracking his joints (apart from annoying me!). He can crack his back just by twisting his upper body.

PerseverancePays · 19/10/2021 07:51

Years ago when I saw my lovely French osteopath, he said all that cracking is very old school and short term and keeps you coming back. He manipulated my spine by rocking it gently and recommending various exercises that would strengthen the muscles.

knittingaddict · 19/10/2021 07:51

It's a woo pseudoscience and a dangerous one at that.

knittingaddict · 19/10/2021 07:52

Also many of the top conspiracy theory promoters are chiropractors. I think that tells you a lot.

icedcoffees · 19/10/2021 07:53

I crack my back and neck daily - not on purpose, it just happens when I move or stretch, lol.

Dontcallmejacqui · 19/10/2021 07:56

It's of no benefit (over any massage or manipulation) and there's a risk of causing a stroke so it's just dangerous magical thinking nonsense.

RosieRoww · 19/10/2021 07:57

No, no- it's actually amazing.

My back sore for 2 years, some days the pain was so bad, that it took me two hours after waking up just to function normally, I didn't want to take any strong painkillers, so finally booked myself to chiropractor.

I had 2 sessions and my back pain were gone it was a great relief.

Gerwurtztraminer · 19/10/2021 08:02

Most chiropractors and osteopaths do a lot of soft tissue / massage type well work well before any adjustments but that would look very boring. The noise, a popping sound, is because the adjustment forces some small air bubbles out of the synovial fluid around the joint.

Adjustments look forceful but aren't really. They don't hurt just feel a bit weird. They really do help get range of movement back into a joint that may otherwise stay stuck. I've used osteopaths & chiropractors on and off for years for neck & back problems and swear by it as a treatment. You do need to find one with good training that you like though, as it's quite a personal thing.

That's interesting, Iwonder why.
knittingaddict · 19/10/2021 08:09

Because chiropractic medicine and conspiracy theories are both big cons. It's not that surprising that one person would pedal both. It's usually conspiracy theories that have become monetized via social media.

romdowa · 19/10/2021 08:17

I go to a chiropractor when my riba dislocates and get stuck at side of my spine. She works absolute magic and gets them back into place . I'm often in so much pain I don't care how she gets them back in.

SnowWhitesSM · 19/10/2021 08:22

My PT cracks, or did crack my back after my work outs when he stretched me. My lower back doesn't crack anymore and hasn't for months.

TravelDreamLife · 19/10/2021 08:22

I did think that.... But.... Out if desperation I've been seeing one for my chronic neck pain, which has caused a 24/7 headache for years & has reached a point I can barely function, no quality of life. I'm seeing one who uses a medical approach. I'm about 50% better in last 4 weeks. It's gentle & quick. It'll hopefully get to a point in next 4 weeks of treatment that I can exercise to strengthen the muscles & live a normal life with maybe monthly visits. Worth it.

What's dangerous is the expensive, sometimes unpleasant treatments, scans & drugs doctors & specialists have subjected me to because they've no idea. Horrible side effects, risks, no results shrug. One included injecting anaesthesia into my skull which made it worse. Next step was supposed to be surgery where they stick electrodes into your head while you're awake. No thanks. Chiro doesn't sound so bad now, does it?

mothermothermother · 19/10/2021 08:24

I’ve had this and the relief can be wonderfully immediate - but it didn’t last for more than a couple of days. Sad

Osteopaths however - I get a less dramatic response but as someone with joint pain and hypermobility - I get long term relief from a session which mean I avoid anti inflammatories and pain relief. Win win for me.

Notjustanymum · 19/10/2021 08:25

My chiropractor put my dislocated hip back in place and relieved me from a week of agony! They also worked on the muscles around my upper back which were cramped and pulling my neck and shoulders out of alignment, finishing by resetting the vertebrae into the right place and giving me exercises to strengthen the muscles and improve posture.
Don’t agree with PP who say it’s a con science - it’s body mechanics!

I did wonder about this, as my cousin is a chiropractor and full-on anti-vaxxer, Covid denier, etc.

I am not educated on this by any means.

But you haven’t really lived until someone jumps on your back and cracks it right into place. Snap, Snap, Crunch!

Oh the brief pain followed by heavenly bliss!

Never been to a chiropractor but my go-to Thai-style spa does this brilliantly.

Gastropod · 19/10/2021 08:28

Osteopaths and chiropractors are not one and the same and should not be confused.

I go to an osteopath every few years for immediate relief from severe back pain. The pain is caused by my spine being out of alignment, and the osteopath fixes that through gentle manipulation. How else one would realign one's spine, I don't know. Medication certainly isn't going to fix that!

An osteopath also completely cured my debilitating pelvic girdle pain during both pregnancies.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 19/10/2021 08:30

I've seen a couple of videos like this, I put them into the same category as spot squeezing videos, so to raise revenue for the channel, not showing a treatment for an individual.
But...I bloody love having my spine cracked even though I know the physio who I've been to who's treatment is barely perceptabe has much much better results than the back cracker who would leave bruises.

purplesequins · 19/10/2021 08:44

there is a risk if stroke from chiropractors (quite literally) cracking the neck.

personally I go to physiotherapists if I have aches. they are incredibly well trained, acredited and regulated.

chiropracters are quacks. not surprised about the antivax link.

gannett · 19/10/2021 08:45

When I had back pain a few years ago I went to a chiropractor because I thought, having not done my research, that it was like physio but specialising in backs. It was complete woo. He talked absolute guff about holistic healing, seemed more concerned that I stop drinking coffee and looking at screens than in my questions about what, physically, his adjustments would do to me, and was very emphatic that I shouldn't think about it too much but it would be very necessary to keep going back to him over the long term. And paying through the nose for it. Not a mention of any exercises or stretches I should do in my own time.

One second of research afterwards told idiot me that chiropracty is indeed a bullshit pseudo-science.

Found a private sports physio. A brisk and no-nonsense young woman who wasted no time in prodding around, asking questions (about my physical exertions, not how much coffee I drank) and prescribing a set of exercises to do daily. They were very tedious and they worked a treat. After a couple of follow-up sessions she said there was no point in me coming back and spending any more money as I had the tools to sort it out myself. No back pain ever since.

Valeriekat · 19/10/2021 08:51

The Chiropractor I saw was a dangerous quack.

Do you mean ribs? Not sure how a rib could get stuck at the side of the spine.

I go to an osteopath every few years for immediate relief from severe back pain. The pain is caused by my spine being out of alignment, and the osteopath fixes that through gentle manipulation. How else one would realign one's spine, I don't know. Medication certainly isn't going to fix that!

If your spine is misaligned then wouldn't you be better having it fixed permanently?

romdowa · 19/10/2021 08:53

I have a connective tissue disorder , so all my bones dislocate , ribs are the hardest to get back in. I'm not sure how it gets stuck but I'm sure it's possible as even my gp has told me that a rib is stuck out of place.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 19/10/2021 08:59

Yep you can basically sublux or dislocate any joint.

Sometimes random bones in my feet go out of place, that’s fun.

Like PPs I choose a decent sports physio who understands physiology…
