AIBU to be furious with the vet?

Hi, our cat was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in the summer and was put in medication. Then a few weeks later she developed an 'ear infection' super scabby head, bald where she kept itching. We thought it was a fight. Trip to the vets diagnosed with ear infection that she was scratching. Anti-bs duly given along with cream and washing it and a cone. No change in 2 weeks. Back to the vet where more injections. The ear cleared up as she couldn't scratch it and then she developed a sore from the cone. Fine. We got more cream etc etc. However one side healed fine and the other is still red raw and she has developed sores on her face!
As she has been to the vet numerous times we assumed they knew best. I was thinking today as this all started at the same time as the thyroid meds and a quick Google shows the most common side effects are severe scratching of the head and neck and sores!
Needless to say I am furious. Why has this not been picked up on?! It has cost us enormously in bills and the vet hasn't even suggested it could be the meds!
My question is AIBU for being angry or is it my fault?
Also what can I do??? Surely this is their error??

You would think if they're prescribing meds then they would know the side effects, and eliminate the meds as the cause first before "treating" the other problems.

I'd be really annoyed and think that they were just charging for treatment that wasn't needed, or they weren't competent enough to be prescribing those meds in the first place.

I'd be inclined to complain, but I'm not sure how far you'd get. I'd be changing vet though. You need someone you can trust to a) not overcharge you and b) actually know what they're doing!

I’d be furious.

Did the medication given from the vet not come with a leaflet, listing side effects, that you could have checked too?

It did but as it was in veterinary jargon I didnt understand it and 4 trips to the vets and phone calls, emails and photos I believe that the vet should have seen this rather than a layman! How can a 'ear infection' spread to the chin, cheek, neck and mouth after 2x antibiotics!
