Do you still live in the area you grew up in, if you don't how often do you travel back home to visit family? For me personally I live about an hour away from where I grew up so it's not that far to travel to see family.

@ShirleyPhallus

I couldn’t think of anything worse. I find it really depressing to go back to my home town and see people who I went to school with, who still frequent the same pubs, married one another, have jobs in the same town etc. It feels very claustrophobic to me and I want to shout “there is a whole world out there!!!!”

Not to mention that everyone still seems to gossip about stuff that happened at school?! It’s so weird.

I couldn't agree more! Mind you, I took it to extreme lengths and now live on a different continent, so Wink

@GrandDuchessRomanov

Yes. I’m 51 and still live in the same house I was born in.
That’s lovely

30 mins away but a different world

Yep. My parents live 5 minutes away in my childhood home. I moved away for uni and lived about 2 hours away for a couple of years but then we moved back in with mum and dad to save for a mortgage. Except my husband had other ideas and fucked off leaving me with a toddler and 8 months pregnant. We stayed with my parents for about 4.5 years, my oldest ended up going to the same primary school I went to! We eventually got a housing association place so they both go to the school down the road now which i much prefer!

It's not how I imagined things panning out if I'm honest. My siblings live further away and I very much feel weirdly like the 'spinster aunt' (despite the accompanying children to my name!) still doing a lot of activities and hanging out with my parents (because they ask me or we see local family events that would be nice to attend together not because I'm Billy no mates!) This wasn't how it was supposed to be and this wasn't the town I would have chosen geographically, economically or politically!

However, my kids are in a brilliant school, we're a short drive/train ride to London whilst still enjoying rural/country life and having my parents closely on hand for support (logistically and emotionally) really isnt to be sniffed at. Plenty of time to spread my wings once my kids are done with school and I fully intend to!

Yes I do. Moved here when I was 10. Lived here 40 years now. I did have a brief spell of living abroad for a year and then in a major city 20 miles away by where I worked for a year but did not like it and had starting dating DH then too who is from my home town. Still really friendly with school friends. I do work in the major city still so think I have always had a bit of an escape although wfh mainly now.

I still live local to where I grew up and would never permanently leave. All my family and friends are here. I went to uni in England and as much as I enjoyed the experience I was glad to come back home and I got homesick towards the end of my course. I've travelled around the world for 4 months in my early twenties but towards the end of my travels I was eager to come home. Home is definitely where the heart is for me. I've seen enough of the world to know I'm happiest here!

Aprilx · 19/10/2021 04:26

No I left a long time ago. I never go back as I have no reason to and no family left there anyway.

I live an hour away, and it's like living on a different planet. My hometown has nostalgia for me but I couldn't think of anything worse than staying there.

Fluffy40 · 19/10/2021 14:25

About half hour drive away,sadly it’s not how it used to be.
