If someone you had been having relations with for around 6 weeks said, ‘Let’s be single together’, what would you take from it?

Going back to your question, I've no idea what "let's be single together" could mean - it doesn't make sense to me. I think you need to ask him to explain himself.

I don't think I would have a fling or a FWB with one of my ex's friends - and I would do that to a friend, either. A proper relationship is a bit different, but I wouldn't do anything casual.

He wants to have sex with you but he's not that in to you

He's not prepared to go to war with your ex over it. He wants to carry on as you were but with no view to commit.

@Thewitchonthemoon From your update, I'd think he really likes you and wants to be in a relationship. He stood up to your ex and basically declared his "intention" when he (your ex) confronted him.

So I think "let's be single together" means 'since we aren't allowed (by your ex) to be in a relationship, let's claim to be officially single but still be together'. Iyswim.

Still, I think you should ask him to clarify.
